Healthy or Contam? (pics)
    #13028256 - 08/09/10 06:29 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

There are several batches here, figured I'd check health all at once rather than several posts.

LC1

LC2

test jars from LC2 - about 9 days since injection.

For some reason, this particular jar didn't progress. It was sterilized/prepared exactly as the other three above but i'm guessing it was just too moist?

test jars from LC1. These are only a couple of days old, but have shown zero progress - do they appear to be too wet?

Thanks for your help with my first experiment :-)

punkrocker - thanks. I heard leaving them a few days before injection could promote growth of other bad stuff... but I'll definitly give it a try next go round.

Do the test jars from LC2 look healthy? What about the LCs themselves?

Thanks!

53 views but only one response... should I get rid of the whole lot? It's honestly my first time out, and I don't know if the fuzz on top of the grain is normal...

Looks like a case of bacterial infection, which is of course not good but isn't the end of the world. I have had wbs jars with bacterial growth and the mycelium was able to colonize it and be spawned succesfully however the growth will be drastically slowed down. If they are far from colonized toss them. If they are close to colonized I would keep them but DO NOT SHAKE THEM. I made this mistake shaking jars that just had a little bit of bacterial contam and they never recovered, but if you allow the myc to fight the bacteria when there's only a little bit the myc should win and it will be just fine.

Usually this is caused by to much moisture in your grain as stated above. I suggest adding just a little bit of vermiculite to wbs so it sucks up the excess moisture and also absorbs the LC or spores you add.
