I've done some stuff like this, when I started getting bored with cakes.

I used glass dinner-ware though.  Like cake pans and glass eating bowls..

Most of them worked.

In my opinion, unless it's done with liquid culture - it's not worth the time.  Takes too long to colonize and consolidate otherwise.

I also found quite quickly -- wide but not deep is the way to go for making "flat cakes" this way.  That way the mycelium doesn't have to dig.  More inoculation points = better as well, because it doesn't take nearly as long for the sections to grow together, which majorly cuts down the whole incubation process.  This is particularly valid when using liquid culture.

All in all, wasn't worth it - then again I never used LC.

I'll tell you what everyone tells anyone in that situation:

Cakes weren't doing it for you?  Work with grains.

Now I've got an idea:  Grain flat cakes.

Oh, one thing though.

Dunk and roll that thing like a normal cake... and set it in a fruiting chamber bottom up.

I'm also doing WBS.. got quite a bit of it going.

My first monotub (penis envy 6) is pinning like crazy right now.. every time I open that tub I see more pins, can't wait to see what comes out of it in 5-7 days!

If you haven't already -- start exploring making spore prints and syringes of your own.  It's really easy.

Once you do this, and establish a trade rating or two - you will never need to order spores again.

I ordered.. maybe 3-5 cube varieties before I started taking my own prints, and trading for other varieties.  Now I've got.. more then I know what to do with, and a nice track record of trade ratings so people can feel perfectly safe trading with me.

Those flat-cakes were kinda fun, it was cool because since all I was doing were cakes, some of my largest mushrooms at the time, came off of those experimental flat-cakes.  I had a really nice flush off of the dinner bowl one I made, using wild Quila for spores.

It's fun to experiment in mycology - hope your little cake puts mine to shame, that'd be a sight :P
