MOLD?!?!?!
    #13025994 - 08/09/10 10:51 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Alright, don't know how this happened since I was pretty sure everything was sterilized, but it happened, and now I need your input. There's a mold spot in my one of my substrate jars! My other jars are fine, but this one is scary. I know better that to place the cake with the others when I get to that part, but I wanted to know, that, if I place this cake in it's own case, Would some mush grow, and would they be safe to consume? I was wondering, also, if I cut the half of the cake off that has the mold, if that would keep this cake from being a total loss?
Pic is below

based on RR's response to similar thread (http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/5313474), I'm thinking I can remove section of mold, and keeping this cake seperate from others, anything that fruits, would be safe???
Thanks for the input.

That looks like trichoderma to me bro!

You could try to remove the cake and then removing the contaminated area with a sterile cutting tool/knife but you will risk sending the trich spores all over you and your house giving high chance to contaminating the rest of your grow and your future grows.

IMO there are two things you can do with that cake.

1) PC it for 90 minutes and toss.PC'ing it will kill the trich/mold rendering it harmless.

2) Put on a pair of swim trunks, get some clean clothes,soap/shampoo/body wash,a towel, and your contaminated jar.Go outside and place your clothes well away from where you plan on opening the contaminated jar.Open contaminated jar and place the contaminated substrate in a shady place and cover with leaves or grass clippings and water every morning to keep hydrated and cool....with any luck you'll get some fruits.

After covering the substrate with leaves or grass clippings it is time to wash yourself off outside before entering the home or grow area again (remember those trich spores are more then likely all over you after opening that jar, this is the reason to wash off before entering the home again),change into clean clothes and go back inside like nothing happened.

I had an 18 gallon montub get contaminated with trichoderma before it even fully colonized.I chucked the contaminated monotub substrate outside in a shady area and covered with leaves and I water every morning and every afternoon lightly unless it rains or is going to rain. Here's a pic of the first pin I noticed, since taking that pic a few days ago I have noticed 5 others...

The pin is in the middle of the pic near the bottom.

Thanks for the info hatter. Used method 2. Set up on small creek bed. Water running by should help keep moist. Did not place too close. Actually spread some hpoo down first on damp earth, placed cake, thin layer poo on top and covered with some dead leaves/vegetation. Good shady area. we'll see what happens. Neighbor actually came out while washing up outside... told em, got covered in poison ivy while walking through woods (they know I'm extremely allergic)lol, so all should be well. Thanks again, and awesome pic of pin. nice camera.
