First Grow... colonization question.

I currently have my jars in a shoe box high in my closet. I put small holes in the shoebox for some gas exchange. It is currently about 80 degrees in the box itself. Should I take them out of the box and let them sit freely on a shelf or leave them as they are. I know this is a noob question, but I just want a successful first grow. Any advice you guys could give for the colonization process would be greatly appreciated. I'm using PF Tek with BRF if that helps. I have six jars of B+ and six PES Hawaiian.

I don't think it would really matter either way, the holes in the shoe box wouldn't even be necessary there would be plenty of gas exchange through the imperfect seal of the box. I'd say leave them in the box, keep them out of site and out of mind for a week or so, then check on them, but of course if your like I was my first grow I'm sure you'll be checking them twice a day lol. Welcome to the shroomery.

Yeah I'm usually checking them about twice a day. I can't seem to get them out of my head. I also noticed that after I sterilized them, the inside of the jars seemed like it had a little extra moisture on it. Im hoping water didn't get in. I had the lids on and three layers of foil. I'm sure I'm just being paranoid though.

I was the same way! But yeah, with PF, I didn't handle my jars all that often. I think you have more of a chance of contaminating if you are moving the jars around. Something otherwise centralized to the verm barrier could be kicked loose, and nobody likes a rainy parade.

Some condensation on the inside of your jars after pcing is totally normal due to the temp difference inside the jar and out.

I agree with leaving them in ur box. It's no different than having them in a tub with a lid on. Just make sure no.tape are covering ur holes and ur fine. You will notice water collecting in ur jars as mycelium grows. It's normal condensation . U should see growth within a week.

As long as it's all white it should be fine it doesn't have to be really rhizomorphic. Grains a little easier to tell then pftek when it's totally colonized but you should wait at least a week after all the outer layer touching the glass is white before birthing it.
For grains I shake at about 30% colonization and in about a week it's all colonized if there are any uncolonized rye berries even a single one wait till it's colonized.

80° F is a bit warm and normal room temperature (70° F to 77° F) is normally recommended with 75° F being ideal.
The reason is because as mycelium colonizes the substrate it will begin to put off heat and raise the internal temperature of the jars/substrate.Mycelium growth has been shown to slow above 83°F.With your jars sitting in 80° F area I wouldn't doubt they are 1-3° F above ambient.
Leave them on a shelf in the room exposed to normal air temperatures and normal lighting...they'll do just fine, and they will benefit from it.
If you still have foil on your jars or tape over the inoculation/GE holes then definitely remove the foil/tape as you need/want proper GE so your jars don't stall out.The dry vermiculite barrier at the top is your contaminant barrier and is all that is needed to keep the nasties out.
