Balance

Balance is key. To what?
We look at the technosphere of the human species on Earth and say, "This is out of balance." It is taking more than it gives. It is out of harmony. Like a conveyor belt only moving in one direction, linearly through time and space, the operations of human technology are consuming Earth's natural resources. We have gotten ourselves into a situation where we have separated the origin from the destination. The belt no longer ends where it began.
Science has long figured out the miracles of the planet's cycles, and people of ancient even knew all about it without the need of technological instruments. Sometimes it's in plain sight, other times it blends with the background, hidden beneath layers upon layers of various self-sustainable systems. The insects pollinate the plants, and the plants feed the insects. The sea evaporates into clouds, and the mountains brings the water back into the ocean it originated from. It is all totally recyclable, taking and giving, balancing itself out. Harmonizing.
People strive for balance these days. They see the world out of balance and want to make a difference where they can, namely with themselves. Individuals everywhere are giving back, if not on a planetary level, then to their respective communities, and if not, then definitely in their relationships. But they do not show this on the news. So you only really know it's happening if you step out into the real world and see it for yourself.
And the great thing about it is that the more you are giving, the more you are also receiving. Smiles are evidence of this. They are contagious. We always see each other as a mirror of ourselves. So if positivity is reflected to us we act like a mirror and reflect it back. This can be done with your self too. That is called the inner smile. Every living being is self-referential.
There is also widespread awareness regarding healthy food and what constitutes nourishment as opposed to mere sustenance. If people haven't found a community of sustainable health, they are practicing it by themselves at home. No matter the field, people want to rebalance themselves, and if they aren't doing it, chances are good they haven't found a wall they can breakthrough, yet.
It's always said that we cannot make a difference. One person doesn't cut it, so why even bother? People like that are staring at the stars while forgetting the ground under their feet. You've always got to start with yourself, level one. Begin at the center and them move outward as you expand your influence. Best thing about it is that the biggest difference you make is with yourself, and nobody can make a bigger difference than that but you.
Fact is that there are forces that are out of my control, and they will play out as they do on their respective level of existence. However I only need to pay attention to what I am doing, what I am giving back. When my life is balanced, I am able to balance other systems within reach. And if harmony is contagious like smiles, then I can sure make a hell of a difference.
The key we all hold. It is your power. Nobody can take this key away from you and only you can open the door.
What you will discover on the other side nobody else will see but you.
Balance is key. To what?
Open and find out.

How can we know what balance is? As far as I know, balance is always there. The eternal interplay.
From that view, I can do nothing. And in the nothingness I find the greatest balance.
Where do you find balance? How do you know it is balance?

I find balance in activities and attitudes that center my awareness, where I feel I am at a zero point, when there is no need to make yin or yang adjustments.
Although in all practicality I believe that a true zero point is never really maintained unless in deep meditation, so adjustments are always necessary, the more moderate the better IME.
I'm not sure how to answer your first and last question though. I guess we just know it when we feel it. I think that with honest introspection we can read the scale and know what we need to do to keep ourselves in balance.

One of the last videos i helped make for the youtube sangha, talking about balance... (theres a part 2 aswell that ill put at the bottom of the post)
In my experience, finding this eternal balance, the life comes into balance aswell, i always wanted to eat healthy, exercise, meditate, do yoga, you know the usual stuff that you know you should do but your too stuck in your ways.... as soon as i found the eternal balance/my Self, then naturally those other things started unfolding in my life, its like everything i wanted to do before became possible, because i was no longer locked into a contracted/fixed mind state.
