Effective Isopropanol concentrations
    #1302135 - 02/12/03 10:50 AM (14 years, 9 months ago)

I'm just wondering what is a good concentration for isopropyl alcohol when using it for counter tops and such. I know that 70% is pretty good for EtOH, but what about Iso?

Isopropyl usually comes (at least in the USA) in 70% or 91% concentrations. Both are extremely effective, but since cost is not very different (if at all), the 91% is probably the better choice to minimize risk of contaminants (assuming your counter tops are pretty tough material...Formica, tile, etc).

stronger doesnt meen better, 70% is better for killing contams cause it doesnt evaporate as fast as 90, leaving more time to kill shit

When I used to work in the food industry,we would use household bleach and water to sanitize.I know that this is'nt answering your question, but thought it was worth mentioning.
We would have inspectors come through regularly and swab for bacteria...so must of worked. We would only use about a teaspoon of bleach in a spray bottle of water.I've heard that the addition of a little vinegar/acid increases the effectiveness.

Thanks everyone, I already use 10% bleach initially, but I like to spray with lysol, let it sit, then set the counter on fire. Works for me. i just don't want to buy lysol anymore. I want to dilute my 91% isopropanol.

a solution of 10-15% isopropyl alcohol and distilled water is effective to sanitize the air . lysol is overkill .
