First post ever, some random noob questions? Heat?
    #13021095 - 08/08/10 10:25 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I've acquired all my supplies to do PF cakes. I am following RR's wonderful videos to a T because it seems everybody else is contradicting each other, or the info is outdated. However I do have a few random questions I would like to get clarified. I know more will be coming up as I progress along. Since this is my first go, I am def anxious to get the best conditioins for the quickest results. Too much heat is my main concern so far.

1. Colonization. The RT. is definitely way too hot for ideal conditions (+/- 92 F). If I run my AC all day (and I dont mind this) I can get it to the lower 80's. However I would love to get in the mid 70's. Any suggestions?

2. FC. I've got a 70 QT. tote I plan on placing inside on a window sill, and also a dual 24' (daylight) tube florescent light I will hang above the FC. (I have not made the holes yet because I want to do this right.) Due to the high heat right now I was wondering if putting more holes in the bottom, the top, or both would be of any benefit? Basically my question is, is there ANY certain way I should construct/modify my SGFC to help compensate fo the higher temp.? And also, should I use my AC during this stage? Fan maybe? I know air currents travel from cold to warm and was wondering if and or how this may be utilized for my heat situation. (Idk if this one even makes sense so bear w me). BTW I am not too busy these days and will be able to personally tend to all manual needs throughout the day.

3. FC/Perlite. Wll 3' perlite be enough for a 70 QT.?

Those are my main concerns for now, but I do have some other thoughts I wanted to ask about.

4. I will be innoc. tomorrow 2 diff. strains for sure. I have 3, and I want to do em all. Any reasons why I should'nt since I'm a first timer?

5. I thought for a few of my jars I would slightly modify the hole placement. Instead of 4 on the outer edges, doing 3 evenly spaced outer holes w/ one in center? Is there any possible downside to this?

Any answers/advice is greatly appreciated.

1) Mini-fridge. Running AC all day for jars makes no sense. Find a mini-fridge that will go as high as 75ish.

2) uh... wait until winter? Grow sclerotia in mini-fridge? I dunno.

3) 4 inches.

4) Go for it. Or save one completely untouched and virginal as backup.

5) Don't modify anything. That said, I do 4+1 in center.

6) Gamble a few drops on some LC. Not mL's, just drops.

You make it all possible. Doesn't it feel good?

Thanks Doc. you're so quick.

1. I really dont want to spend any more money at this time. So besides the mini fridge is there something else I could rig up easily?

2. There is no way I can wait, I've alredy got my mind set and locked. Plus I've already got the cubes spores. Since they are forgiving I would'nt want to start w anythin else.

3. YES I will do.

4. Thats what I wanted to hear. Thanks

5. I kind of figured that if there was any benefit to it, it would be comonplace. I will probably still do one jar like that, just for the hell of it. I'm just curious to see what the diffrent col. times are? (I will noc up 2-3 more jars than my FC can fit just incase any get contaminated anyways). I was going to do 50/50 with the holes but now I think you are right and will listen to the doc.

6. I will be reading up on that later today.

Buy another AC. Even though 80's are fine, make sure you stay as low as possible and never hit the 90's

I never " waste " money on this hobby, it can generate a good amount of cash on the side. Even though i am primarily doing this for myself, if i need to "cover some costs" i got some friends yaknowhatimean

you could setup a separate cooling system using the AC specifically to cool the air around the jars.

IMO though it sounds like your problem is a lack of adequate seal to keep your cool air in.

I have no experience with it myself, but I have heard that a wet towel placed over the jars/tub whatever with a light breeze from a fan should provide a good deal of evaporative cooling.

Right, I have invested quite a bit already. $30 is nothing, even $50 for one at this point will be ok if it's necessary. It's got more to do with the fact that I was set back several weeks, and I really want to get this going. It seems like just when I think I'm all set more issues arise. I really want to PC jars tonight.

I just realized that I do have another window unit around, and I know it's more effective too. I will dig it up. Yes Iknowhatumean however I'm not into that. I love giving and sharing freely. One main reason why I want to this. Maybe I'm crazy, but will I enjoy that as much as any profits.

You are 100% right about the seal. I live in an old shotty city apt. but could you elaborate some on what you mean regarding the seperate cooling system using AC? As long as it's not too complex or time consuming that is. This tek is so simple and I know I will get fruits in the end. I just want the end sooner than later if I can help it.

Cant you just freeze a few bottles of water and keep one around your jars all the time? Swapping them out during the day?

I wouldnt keep them in contact with them maybe just sitting in a tub with them or something. Got to be a cheap and easy solution to your problem. I'm pretty sure people have used the ice bottle idea in fc's.
