NOOOB Alert! Bulk Colonization Question. Are these ready? This looks like a pin maybe ?
    #13020684 - 08/08/10 07:50 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Hello and thanks in advance for all the help.

I was told to wait 10 days to fruit these last Wednesday the 28th so I think its about that time. The sub isnt completely white. I mean its got mycelium all through it but there are patches of substrate that arent fully white.

It looks like it may be ready and are these pins I see? This is my first grow and I feel like a proud papa kinda.

Please let me know if I should introduce FC to this tray. My plan is not to case and to let the tray sit under a fluorescent bulb 12 on 12 off with regular fanning and misting. Is that a good plan? Should I put this tray in a tub instead or is it good in the corner of a room under the light ?

To me that casing doesn't look very healthy. It looks like you have some cobweb on there. A healthy casing should look like a nice bold white.

I dont see any cobweb mold in the substrate. Ive had cobweb appear in some of my grain jars so im familiar with how it looks. Its probably just fuzzy looking due to the camera phone i used to take the pics

its is PF Tek Cakes GT strain crumbled (poorly) to Coffee, straw, coir, gypsum, hpoo, chicken poo, vermiculite

those "sticks" are actually pieces of straw but it does look like i left twigs in there.

It looks white but it isnt solid white like I see in pics but Im getting pins and its right around the time RR told me to put into fruiting conditions so you see my concern

If it's mostly coir, you could probably go ahead and fruit it. If it's more poo/straw, I'd wait.
Probably be about the same time to harvest either way though.

If you are pretty new at growing why are you using such an advanced substrate. Just try using standard horse poo and I think you'll have a better looking casing. I have been growing for a long time and I just don't see the need for a substrate with all of that crap in it. I find it is best to keep things simple. The simpler it is the less chance that it's gonna fuck up.

I took a closer look at the pic in your sig and there is some healthy myc in  there, btu it should colonize more evenly. I suggest going to WBS or at least break up your BRF jars a lot better than you did.

Good luck and peace

Its kinda hard being new on this board and getting the "right" information.

As per RRs posts a substrate with more ingredients in it is better for healthier fruit so I got as many as I could afford at the time.

I didnt crumble the cakes well at all, they were probably the size of a quarter. Kinda on the larger size. I have a bunch of WBS and Rye colonizing right now so my next grow should be a lot better.

Im so freaked out about this tray and I hope it does not end up being cobweb mold that is growing on the corner. I guess Ill leave it for a few more days to see if it gets any better (more white) and to make sure that that isnt a cobweb contam in the corner.

Thanks for all the help!

I'd go ahead and expose to fruiting conditions now.  Next time, chop your straw finer and/or place a weight on top during colonization to help hold the straw compressed.  What happens is the straw that is sticking up above the surface is going to dry out, which will cause the mycelium to die off, making room for trichoderma and other molds to grow.

ok that makes sense. I will put this baby in a shotgun terrarium and take your advice on my next grow about chopping up the straw and using the weight.

Thanks and hopefully I will be able to post some fruiting pics over the next few days !

Can't tell from the pics if the whole thing is exposed to air when you took the pics. If so fruiting starts now whether you like it or not haha.

CO2 drops that fast and moisture stops evaporating pins are gonna happen.

Consider getting RR's videos. I don't have them but spank0r on this board is a buddy of mine and he bought them and we watched them together. Very informative.

Here's my 2 cents. I've had a similar problem when I did my first bulk substrate . I had bits and pieces of straw sticking out . Making it look Like it wasn't  complete . And it was pinning at the same time.  I only used straw and cow poo . But Chopin straw smaller is a plus . Also have it all evenly layered . And press the straw down a bit . but not to much just to even the straw out. An as stated a weight would help.  I ended up getting 3 flushes . It sounds like ur grow will succeed .  The only difference I did was use a monotub so I think that help keep the contaminates away. Try one next time . It's the same as casing . Good luck

And put it in tub with perlite. In the tray. Low 90 humidity. Monotub next time. Will

I just cased a very similar looking tray to yours. I have multiple containers of straw including large tubs and some bags of straw. I was in a rush to pasteurize the straw, so I didnt cut it up well at all. It is extremely important to chop your straw and weigh it down to colonize.

I went ahead and cased a large tub with just peat moss and verm mix. It wasn't quite fully colonized at the top because I hadn't weighed it down. It seems to be fine now though, about to flush the first time with an insane amount of fruits. I also took some of my lesser colonized straw and simply buried it outside also with good results.

Funny story, my last outdoor grow got dug up and eatin by some raccoons. I shit you not, I watched some coons falling off a swingset in the neighbors yard the other night.

I am new and i have a question about P. Mexicana LC...i injected some bags with my LC and they aren't really doing much....can you tell me at what age the LC sort of dies out? I know it has a life span and it has been at least three months since i got it from a friend. I was stored in a sealed container. I was instructed to swirl it or shake it lightly every third day....did i do something wrong...is it past it's prime.

Also maybe someone could link me to a Mexicana forum where i could ask questions. I am kind of a NOOB online as well. (my next question would be what are the proper incubation techniques while the Mexicana is in my bags)

Shadow-Yogi...
