Grain 2 Grain with Pans

OK, this is what I got: Rye grain inoculated with multi spore not an isolated strain. I learned the hard way that you don't shake the jar with multi spore. Now this is my question...... Now that my jars are fully colonized, can I do a Grain to Grain transfer like you can with cubensis or will the jars stall like they do when you shake them? Will I have to grow out on agar and isolate a strain or inoculate each jar separate or can I do a G2G from a multi spore inoculation like I plan?

Why? I always shake with no problems after first third colonized.

with cubensis it is fine to shake the jar but with pans not all the strains that germinate from a multi spore inoculation are compatible and will bond together. If you shake your jar half way through colonization to speed it up colonization it will separate the strains even more and your jars will stall really bad and may not even recover.

I've done pans and shaken with no problems.

I also shake my pan jars when they are around 20% colonized, I've never seen one stall as a result.

so both of you are saying you are shooting a spore syringe directly into grain and germinating the spores that way and you are shaking with no ill effects. If i have an isolated strain and shake, it's fine but with the other way my jars always stall.....Here is something I found that also states do not shake with pans...... http://www.shroomery.org/8421/Panaeolus-cyanescens-FAQ .... under should I shake the jars? I am not saying you guys are wrong..I just haven't had any luck with it and thats why I started searching for answers.I don't have any contamination problems, my jars will colonize and then I give a little shake and the jars stall out sometimes completely...they look as if they where straight from the pc.

Type of filter on jar [Re: meethead]

What kind of filter do you have on your jars and how much empty space do you leave? Could it be possible that they may have stalled even if you hadn't shaken them?

I have done all that...it is definitely from the shaking...I am by no means an amateur at this. I have been at it for years only started with pans though. I use quart jars about 3/4 full. Jar lids have four small holes at N,S,E,W. I turn the lids over so seal is facing up then I place a filter( the good ones from fungi perfect) on top put ring on and screw shut. My grain is fine, not to wet not to dry, not full of exploded kernels. I have gone back and looked at everything else from A-Z. I have jars that I shake and jars I do not.I have no prob if I don't shake, the jars colonize fine. I guess if everyone else is shaking, it must just be the strain I have.

Not correct.
If your mycelium stalls after shaking, it means it's contaminated with bacteria. Every strain of every species of mushrooms I've ever grown benefit from shaking the grain spawn at about 20% to 30% colonization. RR

may be you guys are right, but one thing is for sure I do not have a contamination issue. Even after the jars stall I have left them there for a month or more and the grain looks like I just took it from the pc. I will try a new strain of pans and see if I have any luck. Thanks for all the input and suggestions.
