using a hot plate instead of stove top
    #13017940 - 08/07/10 04:13 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Do you guys think a hot plate like this http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=274999&catid=135247&aid=338666&aparam=274999
would be able to heat up an AA Pressure Canner 941 41 Quart such as this one http://www.allamericancanner.com/allamerican941pressurecanner.htm or is it too small?
and most importantly do you think it could handle the weight?

It would never happen with that thing. If you dont want to use the stove you should get a cheap propane burner. The proper electric burner for a 941 would need to be metal coil style burners for proper contact of the non--flat bottom, and a it would need lots of power WITH infinite heat control. Most shut off automatically at a certain temp in a cycle and the burner never gets hot enough to build much pressure.

what is the wattage on that thing? anything over 250W will work, the more watts you got the faster you get it boiling.

Aren't the propane burners a little rough on one's equipment? I know they will warp an aluminum cooker. I would get the propane thing as a last resort.
We have used hot plates and the tattoo place in town uses them for their sterilizer, you just have to get a good one like Rave said.

I have personal experience in this, and have gone through this exact thing. You CAN use a "hotplate" for operating a 941, but it will never ever happen with no stinking 250 watts. I had a 1000 watt one that wouldnt even be able to bring it past 3 psi loaded, ever. I had a 1500 watt total double burner that I sat the 941 on both burners and it took for god damn ever to bring up to 15 psi and it was nearly impossible to hold it there because of the automatic thermostat that practically any home type electric stove has.  The element just cycles on and off never getting anywhere close to the full potential. I had a 220v commercial burner that did work pretty good but they use juice like crazy and were very expensive and hard to find.

I have heard that you can short out the thermostat control somehow and cause the cheapies to work right, from the proprietor of unicorn bags Lou. Otherwise your looking at finding a commercial 220v+ hotplate to really get the job done properly. Those run about $300+ for a good one.

You can get a cheap china made propane burner for less than $50 off ebay or the net. It works fine on aa burners I have done literally a thousand runs with one. Don't waste your time or money on an electric hotplate to run a 941! Gas is much better.

Propane is fine on AA cookers and will not damage a 941 in any way. AA cookers are made out of cast aluminum, there is no danger in using a propane cooker. You obviously dont roast the shit out of it with a jet burner style one though, you just want a decent flame with a spread like you would find on a gas range at home.
