To case or not to case my trays?

I have 4 trays of DRF cakes spawned to coir/verm/gypsum awaiting full colonization. They will be fruited in my martha which has a coolmist on the bottom shelf running 24/7, no US. I test ran the coolmist for a bit and in a period of a little over 24 hours it had the rh at around mid to late 80's. I don't know if it would have gone above that in another day but I doubt it. I have read that I want higher rh for good mushroom growth, but I have also read that if I case I can get away with rh in the 80's due to the moisture in the casing layer. I have further read that casing layers contam a lot which is making me hesitant. If I case I was thinking of a 50/50 mix of peat moss and verm.
What are your guys thoughts on this?

You don't have to case coir. I used to but after trying to fruit coir uncased I realized the results were just as good, adding a casing layer just provided another way for contams to take hold.
Here is an uncased tray.

My concern is the lower ambient RH and how cased vs uncased makes that acceptable vs not so acceptable. Thoughts?

trays do best at 86% rh i believe so your rh of 80+ should be fine for good growth

Case some and leave others uncased. Try different casing recipes and see which one has the best balance of what you like best and what is obtainable to you conveniently. Experiment a little and try different things. HL

Is peat moss and verm a good case? Is it easy to contam? I know nothing really of peat moss. Good idea though of casing some and not others, I might leave a tray or 2 uncased, just worried about the rh not being high enough for them.

50/50 peat moss/verm makes a fine casing layer and it's what I use. Pasteurize your casing properly and and it will be plenty contaminate resistant. Click the link below for a quick and easy 5050 casing mix. HL
