Do not boil your grains.  What you need to do is get the water boiling then pour the WBS in and shut the heat off then stir really well for the next 5-10 minutes..  This is called simmering..  Then dump into your strainer and let dry..

Interesting simmering technique. My buddy dumps the grains in cold water and sets it on medium heat. It's simmering when there is steam coming off the water's surface but it's not boiling.

Your technique sounds like a good idea Damion.

Well it isn't really my tech but alot of people do it this way as well as me.  Cause if you boil it then you actually burst the grain so I get the water to boil and dump in the grains this will immediatly bring the temp down and then u shut the heat off and stir for 5-10 minutes..

I do it a little different, though I use rye.

I fill a pot with hot tap water.
Set the pot on burner set to high.
Pour in grain.
Bring to boil.
As soon as boil is reached, strain.

I don't use the "boil" to hydrate the grain, just so that its hot enough to dry thoroughly.

Either.  I used to strain all mine out, then I discovered sunflower seeds contain lignin.  Lignin is found in the sunflower seed and is an oil beneficial to myc growth.  Now I leave some in.  I place the discarded sunflower seeds out in my yard and the birds eat it.

That's what I used to do.  Now I leave 40-50 percent of my sunflower seed floaters to utilize the benefical lignin oil for my myc.

I've noticed myc really likes sunflower seeds too. I strain the floaters and give them to the birds (and floaters, initially, are 99% sunflower seeds). Someone has a WBS tek that says remove them all...but the way myc goes for them and for cracked corn first makes me think they're good stuff.

:haha:  That would be my tek.  I have since then discovered the benefits of lignin and have nowadays opted to leave the "floaters" in, about half of them anyway.  In fact, that thread is where I discovered lignin and the benefits of lignin for myc.  Clicky

Save it as a grain master or do grain to grain transfers from it.

It sucks working in a glove box, but doing 9q usually takes about 30 minutes start to finish. The results are hard to argue with.

This is what I do too, but I take it off a little b4 a boil is reached.

It takes 25-35 minutes usually for a large pot of cold water and grain to reach this point.
