all was well...but then
    #13014852 - 08/06/10 09:57 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

When I first started growing everything went fine I used the bulk rye method thread on this site. Following it step by step I had no problems. After a little time, and some confidence, I continued to do the same thing, but after time, in my jars all I got was wet, stinky, dark brown rye, with no contamination and no Mycelium. For the life of me, I cant seem to figure out what I am doing wrong. Does any one know or has anyone had this issue in the past, that can lead me into a direction of what I could be doing wrong in the first stages of prep and incubation?

I have used both new and printed spores.

Not good sterile technique? too much water in grains?

I guess what I mean is there is no sign of mold...just brown stinky useless rye.

We on many occasions have thought it was too much water too much water, but bringing water content down doesn't seem to help, we end up in the same results.

as for sterilization, is there anything you can suggest aside from the room spray, gloves, PCing, alcohol pads, bandaids, air tight containers.

I have only been PCing for one hour...is it possible we need to cook for longer then one hour, and let it cool before releasing the pressure?  We have PC'd for an hour, then immediately let the pressure out in order to start our next batch of jars.

that's probably you're problem, because by releasing the pressure it might be dislodging the filter on you're jar, also, 90 minutes works best.

Is it really dark brown? That could be dangerous contamination and you should flush it down the toilet A.S.A.P. and throw out the jar, don't bring it near your grow environment. That stuff is really dangerous man.

The problem is your inoculation technique. You're not keeping the air around you sterile and controlled. That is so important during inoculation when the spawn is so weak and it is just starting to grow any little bits of mold will destroy it and cause the problems you are having.

If you're having problems still after taking the best precautions of sterilization you can then I suggest building a glove box/still air box. Which is just an enclosed environment you can stick and move your hands in. So no moving air currents will trouble you.

Here is a really advanced one, you don't need to get this high-tech with it, it is just the first example I found.

All you need is an open and clear Rubbermaid container with two large holes big enough for your arms to fit in that you can place over your jars and work area, and you work inside there.

Thank you for all your suggestions.  With all the thought, I don't know where we got the idea that we would only PC for one hour...never even thought to extend that out to more time.  We have had many "changes" in our home over the last year....which means I guess perhaps our house isn't as sterile as it once was...thank you for the ideas on the box, we will put one into place and let you all know of the results!!!
