Help with casing procedure....
    #13012400 - 08/06/10 01:18 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Hey all...

Ok so I've done the 'casing' thing a few times... had some success had some failure... This last time the myc ripped right through the casing layers, top and bottom. What should I do next time? No incub after casing? cold shock? I just want to use the supplies I have now (cubie syringes, rye, coir, and verm) so PLS don't say to go buy peat and hunt down a ph buffer.... Should I just do this here (http://www.shroomery.org/10858/How-to-do-Coir) or continue trying to 'case'?

Verm alone is not a great casing. It will work, just isn't great.

If you don't want to get peat, then don't case.

Grain spawned to coir will fruit just fine without a casing.

I'm all down for free manure and a proper casing.

But if your not going to do it right, ie. proper pasteurization of sub and casing, proper casing materials,
and ph balance. Then you might as well not do it at all.

uncased coir can give great results, and is quite simple. Uncased manure works wonders too.

And even though you don't want to buy anything else, gypsum would be something you should add
to your shopping list.

like 5%
and cased with verm and peat

I was just about to edit my post and say that, the addition of gypsum and spent coffee grounds will help.

Nice pics!

After trying different blends I've pretty much stuck with this now...

50% Straw
20% Cow Manure
15% Coir
10% Drywall Gypsum
5% Used Coffee Grounds

I rarely case anymore.

I've never used a mono lol.

I have always done greenhouses. I have used both, cased and uncased, but haven't developed a firm
opinion yet. I just recently started with agar, so maybe once I get a good isolate I can
run some experiments.

My next run is going to be with spongiform's blocks though.
