how can i get maximum yield?
    #13011806 - 08/06/10 11:08 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Whats up guys i have 6 quart jars going right now:
3 puerto rico in millet seeds
1 penis envy in millet seeds
1 equador in millet
1 equador in bird seeds
1 puerto rico in a rye grow bag

I tried making about 24 jars and experimenting with different substrates but i think my problem was that i couldnt get the moisture right with the bird seeds.. All the millet ones i made look like they're working though.

ok my question is... how can i grow these for maximum yield?? I know different strains work better in different substrates.

and also... i am going to make about 10 more jars of millet... could i just do a grain to grain transfer?? and how much should i put in about 2 tablespoons or what? do i scrape a lot off or just put in a clump of colonized seeds?

Thanks

Sounds like you're getting ahead of yourself.

Do casings with all of your jars, and a larger casing using your puerto ricans (just crumble all of em up together).  You can use those aluminum trays at grocery stores.

Alternatively, make mini monos for each quart jar using coir.

I wouldn't attempt a G2G transfer unless you have VERY sterile conditions.  Ideally, you'll want a laminar flow hood, but a working glove box might suffice.

There are a lot of things you can do to help improve yields.

Like you've already mentioned, you can do grain to grain with millet, but as it tends to clump together, just spoon some out (as opposed to trying to shake some into a jar like you'd do with rye.) A tablespoon should be plenty for a quart jar.

Also, you can try spawning to manure, or manure/straw. This should help with yields. Whatever you do choose to use, make sure your substrate is properly hydrated to field capacity.

Most importantly though, you've got to give the mushrooms the proper conditions once fruiting is introduced. Keeping your humidity high while providing plenty of free air exchange is the key.

Also you can clone or isolate for big, fast mushrooms. I like to clone clusters, as this seems to help me with yields, and isn't as involved as working with agar. However, if you do agar work, you can really improve your yields by making the proper selections.

Thanks for the help guys... i have access to a laboratory... Ive tried to grow before and kept getting contamination. So now i autoclave all my jars here and use the laminar flow hood for inoculation. and i have them colonizing @77F in an incubator... the growing will NOT be done here though LOL

@Issius- Ive seen people put a layer of colonized substrate then put a 50/50 coco/verm mix on top... do u suggest that or should i mix them all together then put a layer of coco/verm on top?

I also bought this kind of coco bio bizz coco mix... but im not so sure its going to work now, bc its not fibers, its more like really coarse dirt.

@sepsis- ive tried with agar 3 different times. i  tried it with LB agar- which is used to grow bacteria... needless to say that didnt work

Then i had one of the professors make me some Potato dextrose agar and i put about 2cc's on each plate using a diff strain on each plate.. ive  had them sitting at room temp for over a week now and they still havent grown. any suggestions??

Depends.  If you want really good yields, seems to me that straw and horse shit is the best.  Coir is easier though since it is more contam resistant.
I don't think thats the right coir by the way.  You want to buy the stuff that comes in bricks, then you can easily just hydrate it using boiling hot water in a clean 5gal bucket.

For casings, what you said is right.  You want casing on the bottom, then your substrate, then you want your top layer to be 1/4 the size of your substrate layer.  This is pure casing though, and won't be as good as spawning to bulk substrate.

You can use coir as a bulk substrate.  Simply mix with hydrated coir and let it colonize, then continue the casing procedure.

As an fyi, adding things like coffee grounds and gypsum can improve yields.  I've heard coffee is contaminant prone so read up on it more.  I've never used either, though I'm planning on incorporating gypsum into my bulk coir grow.

I don't really do much agar work, so you might want to ask this in the advanced mycology section where people who are more experienced may respond.

But I think you really should have seen a little growth by now. Mycelium won't grow on agar without enough nutrients, so maybe double-check your recipe?

My advice to you is before you ask us these questions you should do more
independent research on growing. Doesnt sound like you have the knowledge
to jump into this thing yet.
