Pin from my outdoor patch
    #13011026 - 08/06/10 07:01 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Just wanted to share this pic of the first pin that appeared on my outdoor patch.

About a week and a half ago I had an 18 gallon monotub contaminated with trich before colonization was even over,so I dumped the contaminated substrate outside in my side yard and covered with leaves and watered every day it didn't rain...this is what I have so far..just wanted to share.

:haha:  Noice.  All my outdoor summer attempts have failed due to 100 degree temps and above for the last month.  When the temps cool off, I am going to do a proper outdoor bed.

The heat index has been damn near 105° F lately with the actual highs in the low to low/mid 90's.My spot receives very indirect sunlight for only a few hours out of the day.

I wake up every morning around 4 a.m. and go check on it,by 6 a.m. if it hasn't rained the day or night before I will water it.

What I do is remove the top layer of dead leaves and give it a good misting with my garden hose (set to "mist") and then cover back up with the dead leaves.By mid morning or afternoon if it hasn't rained I'll grab the hose again and mist the top layer of leaves (this helps to keep the temperature down some I believe).

Yep it does.

My outdoor attempts this summer have been yellow and Elm Oyster along with Shaggy Manes straw baskets and outdoor monotubs.  I'm gonna wait till the temps cool off and construct wooden beds and dig areas out of the ground 6 inches deep and grow multiple mushroom patches.  To grow outdoors this fall, I have King Tuber, Pink, blue, yellow and elm oyster spawn fully colonized and stored in the fridge.  I also have a few jars of colonized Shiitake, left over from May and 1 jar of Shaggy Manes that have been stored in the fridge, not to mention, freshly inoculated Azure LC and agar.

I'd like to try cultivating some edibles someday as I love Portobello/buttons,and I am always cooking thai dishes that call for mushrooms I can't find anywhere.

Lots of species will grow on brf cakes. Not ports, but lots of others.
So you can get a good culure going before you step up to bulk prodction.

Start with Oysters get a feel for the outdoors.  I don't see why Ports (Agaricus)won't grow on pf cakes if the cakes were prepared with 20% composted manure, like pan cyans pf cakes.

i get much better results when i cover the patch with some clear painters plastic or a blue tarp.  i cut slits in the plastic to help with FAE.  i lift up the plastic every morning and water it, the plastic then traps all the moisture and make the perfect environment for fruiting.  works much better that just covering with leaves, if you can spare the obviousness.

I know.  That's what I am going to do next time here in a few months when the temps in my region cool off.

Leaves and grass clippings have never done me any harm and I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss them.

im not dismissing anything, leaves will work, but really it all depends on the region you live in.
i've had luck doing it all sorts of ways, but i can get 1.5-2lbs dried of a small patch if i give it a perfect plastic microclimate to grow in.

  Nobody said you were dismissing anything.  Where I am at it's very high humidity (80-90%) coupled with temps in the 100's with a heat index of plus 5.  I got a pound and a half in a month with very little effort but any other attempts at the outdoors this last month has been meet with failure.  This my first season growing outdoors.  It's all about the microclimate.
