Can I grow with these, or do I need something Else?
    #13009192 - 08/05/10 08:27 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

After multiple hours of research and years of paying someone else to bring me mushies, I've decided to grow my own and see if I should delete the middle man. In my research I have come across various kits that want to rape me for my money. Now I have a $50 Budget for shroom growing. In my research I discovered two things.

1. The Rye Grain Mushroom Grow Bag

And

2.The Golden Teacher 10ml Syringe

Now I am curious as to if I need anything other than these two objects to make mushies. If so please inform me without a difficult to understand aspect that may come from a well trained mind. Do take into consideration I've never experimented with growing before.

Go with sporeworks for both these items, they're much more reliable, you're breaking rules by posting non-sponsor links.

Also, it's best to simply buy the syringe and get the rest at home.

My apologies, I had no intention of foul play. I have a rabbit that is a shit machine and a pot full of dirt... could that possibly substitute the items that I could find at sporeworks? (disregard the non-sponsored links.) I wanted to buy the rye bag because I don't want to have to track down vermiculite and other various products.

Well your gonna need to read a lot more first off since those are basically the first answers your gonna get... I dunno about these special grains mix but just rye berries or rye grass seed or wild bird seed and water are enough for myc to grow well but I suggest to start out I would research the many variations of the pf tek it is a lot more forgiving and very cost efficient then all you need is some spores and a fruiting chamber you will learn a lot more this way and soon be pulling in bulk weight the name of this game is patients and being clean.. hope that helps good luck

If you're going to do this you need preparation and knowledge.  Don't try to cut corners or you will fail.

For a beginner I recommend the PF Tek.  Search for it.
Also, read up on a shotgun terrarium.

Watch the videos.

As for a beginner I've heard Psilocybe Cubensis, B+ strain is a favorite.

You can edit you're text to remove the links.

I started out with bulk, you would need a pressure cooker, coir, poo, straw or other bulk substrate, a meat thermometer for pasteurizing and a few other odds and ends.
Oh, and grains, bird seed(mullet) is widely used as are rye berries, I personally started out with popcorn and have had a decent success rate so far.

The way you speak of is definitely a viable route, it might take a while longer compared to PF cakes. Rye alone is not really a bulk method but you will get mushrooms from just a rye bag.

IMO the most economical thing you could do is get a rye bag, a syringe and a brick of coco coir, I advise coir as it is very hard to fuck up. This will allow you to grow mush inside the bag effectively and with good yield. You will need to hydrate and pasteurise about 1/4 of the coir brick but minor, do that research later.

Thank you very much badman, I'll most likely try that. What do I do with the coir? stick it on top of the rye? bury it in the rye?

Small correction, one type of bird seed is millet. This is a mullet:

Jamie: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11916595#11916595 is what you do with coir.

When you get your coir youll notice it is pressed in layers, you have to split off about a 1/4 of the brick place in a bowl/bucket, whatever. Pour about one litre of boiling water over the brick, stir up and let cool. When cool check the water content by squeezing the coir with your hands, if too wet squeeze excess water out if too dry pour some in bit by bit untill it is at field capacity. If its at field it wont drip when you pick up a load but will if you squeeze gently and water should flow freely when squeezed really firmly.

This is then put in jar/s or an oven bag and pasteurised, the core coir temperature is held at 60C for 60 min using a pot of water and meat thermometer.

Above bit is only done AFTER the rye bag is 100% white. The rye is broken up to separated the grains from one another, the two are mixed well to disperse grains through the coir substrate and put back in to the bag the rye originally came in. The bag is folded over and kept close with paper clips.

Do the grab bag at sporeworks. That way youll have several shots at success. Go get 2 pounds of brown rice flour from you local heath nut store (to make sure its organic or fungicide free)Get a bag of vermiculite and a 12 pack of half pint jars. Take the $20 you have left and buy a rock.

Your Welcome.
