Unlimited mycelium
    #13008312 - 08/05/10 04:59 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Ok, what if I took 1 fully colonized jar of mycelium and blended it, (possibly with a little h202?) then used the slurry to inoculate 6 new jars and so on. Or skip the blender and just break off chunks of myc. and try to put them in the brf jars (in a sterile way)

Grain to grain... there's a video about it.

But with pf cakes, no. That dry layer is contaminated.
And how do you plan to sterilize the blender?

And please forget peroxide exists, it's useless.

It would be insanely difficult to do this in a sterile manner.

But lucky for you, this is not a new hobby and the result you are looking for has been desired
in the past.
Enjoy!

Bonus: You can still use the donor jar!

I thought about doing this but you have to break through that dry vermiculite "filter" to really knock up the jar. Probably better used with WBS or Rye Seed--getting a bag of both this weekend.

No need to blend the mycelium or add anymore water because then you're throwing off the moisture content of your substrate (I think), just crumble up the cake and pour a little in each jar.

You don't NEED to have a verm filter. You could always make a filtered lid if you wanted
to inoculate without a syringe, but don't want a pc.

Why does the dry verm layer matter? can't I just wipe it off like usual and wash the cake? Or even just cut that part of the cake off. And why is peroxide useless? I see a lot of people on here having success with it.

Why does the dry verm layer matter?

go into your basement, take the filter out of your furnace, give it a lick.

No fucking way right? The dry verm layer is a filter. It has filtered out all the nasties you
don't want in your jar.

Can't I just wipe it off like usual and wash the cake?

Sure. If your going to fruit it. The cake is resistant to contamination now since there
is no "vacancy" for new organisms to move in.

That doesn't mean they won't be landing all over it. So if you take some fully colonized sub
thats covered in spores etc, and put it on in uncolonized sub, those contams will move right on in.

And why is peroxide useless? I see a lot of people on here having success with it.

Doing what? Getting rid of cobweb? Yup. Sterilization? Nope.

Here you go.
Doing it this way, you can shake and then do cake 2 cake.
Talk about explosive growth, I bet that really takes off.

Polyfil filters, cheap and easy.

Ok well if you can't spawn with brf cakes because they have too many contaminates due to the verm layer, how do casings work? Don't casings provide a "vacancy" for new organisms to move into?

And why would any other type of grain be better in terms of contaminating your new substrate? Is it because a diffeerent type of filter is used?

Theres a Tek on here somewhere (wish I could remember who posted it) where they knock up a jar of WBS, then add sterilized water through an injection port, shake it up, then extract the mycelium water into an LC jar.

why dont you try that?

If your questions are because your a stubborn dick than F-off.

If your questions are because you want to learn. So be it.

The layer has the contaminates not the cake. But when you dispose of the verm layer your
shaking the nasties everywhere. Including all over the cake. Whenever you are adding something
to a sterile, uncolonized substrate, you want your additive to be sterile.

As for your different types of grain question, its not the type of grain, its how its prepared.
When you do a G2G transfer, you want the entire process to be sterile, so that no contamination
can be introduced. Thats impossible when working with a verm layer.

As far as the casing layer goes..

I want to avoid using the term "non-nutritious". But for our purposes thats exactly what it is.

You wouldn't use manure as a casing. It would sure as shit contaminate.

When you are fruiting, spores etc are going to land all over the place. Problem (for them)
is they need a place to live. If theres no real estate, the pose no issues.

Look up a term. I believe its microbiota antagonism.

Yes I'm here to learn as much as possible. That's why I invest so much of my time into this hobby. And no I'm not being a dick... dick :blowme:

just find something that works, and grow yourself some shrooms.  in the meantime, crack open a beer and read up on succesfull grows and simple grain to bulk teks.

i tried different and new things for a while without being ready enough and ended losing 6-7 months of work, decided to go back to basics and follow teks to a t and i got me a garden!  cheers.
