How can I get mushrooms to grow in my garden/yard?

Being new to mushrooms, I have no idea where to start, and all the guides I can find are about indoor growing. How can I go about getting mushrooms to grow in my garden and/or backyard?

Depends on where you live.

Easiest way, plant some colonized cakes.

Easier than that, you can just plug it in the ground and kick dirt over. Here's one example:

You're welcome, I happened to be here. Somebody else will be by soon.

Yep, I wanted to make sure you didn't live in the dessert or alaska first.
But yeah "planting" a colonized substrate should work where you live.
However don't expect to go out and fill a basket. I live just north of you, and the stuff I put outside might *maybe* yield an 1/8th after a good rain.
HaHa
Dessert I mean Desert of course.

Why would I want to grow outside? Main reason is as of right now I'm in college and living with parents, so at home parents probably wouldn't approve, and they would almost definitely find, and don't feel like getting kicked out of school if they happen to find that growing during a room inspection or anything. Mainly I wanted to see if I can plant some outside to sort of make a "farm" out in the woods somewhere near my school, so I (and my friends after I graduate) can come back to the same places year after year.

Don't grow on school property, don't grow on parents' property.
I'm gone- peace out.

Yeah, it wasn't going to be on school property, it was going to be a decent little hike away, and I'm also a 5 minute walk to maryland, so, might put it over there.
And they won't come back? I had always heard people talking about mushrooms growing in the same places?

Yes, native mushrooms. If you wanted to determine which psychoactive mushrooms are native to your area, then try and "plant" those, that could work.
But you should take into consideration, there are probably reasons we don't normally cultivate those indoors. The common psychoactives we cultivate indoors will not recur where you live.

Take your spent sub and throw it outside... Try to pick a shady spot, possibly under a tree. You can dig a little hole, put your sub into it, then throw a casing layer over it. You can also just lay your cakes atop the soil and break them up a bit.

i would look to find a spot in the woods where you find naturally growing mushrooms growing. this way the environment would be better, and instead of using a trash can you could use a 5 gallon bucket.
