Sterilization methods
    #13007534 - 08/05/10 01:57 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

So I've been thinking about sterilization and I'm wondering if there are alternatives to the pressure cooker.  Here's my thought process.

Why do we use PCs?  Because it allows us to get the temp up to around 250 by increasing the boiling point of water.  So great, we know that works.

Is there anything stopping me from using a lab furnace at 300C?  Or maybe less, say 200C, whatever.  Will this work?

I have access to several high temperature furnaces (1200C max) in my lab.  My situation is somewhat unique in that I have a very small lab group and I run most of the equipment myself (I do not like to share my equipment with others) and no one touches it because they know its mine.
Smells aren't an issue because I'm always doing something that smells weird (piss, fish, whatever).

So...will this work?  Or are the high pressure necessary as well as the temperature.

Lab furnace isn't going to increase the boiling point of water.
Crank it to 1100, water still boils at 212 or whatever it is where you are.

You make it all possible. Doesn't it feel good?
