Off-the-Record Instant Messaging: Pidgin/Adium

I've been wanting to make this post just to raise some awareness in the community as to the availability of secure instant messaging via two wonderful chat clients called Pidgin (best option on a PC) and Adium (best option on a Mac.) Adium comes with an OTR (Off-the-Record) plugin built in, while Pidgin requires the download of a separate OTR plugin that is quite easy to get and install.
I've been hanging with a couple of folk lately who haven't got me paranoid exactly (I subscribe to Terence McKenna's statement that paranoia is doing the work of the man for the man) but who do have me thinking about communicating about certain things more securely.
Both these chat clients are actually just better and more user-friendly, in my experience, than AIM itself, and can be used with AIM accounts.
Download Adium for your Mac here
Download Pidgin Here

Toodles!

You want we should do this here, or over secure tunnels through the interwebs? I miss you.

Yeah. I don't have the internet at home but when I take my laptop to cafes etc I use Tor as well.

Yeah not all my friends are gonna get it, but as for the ones who won't there are some things I simply won't talk to them about over the interwebs.

Tor/Vidalia? I have the Tor plugin installed as well for Firefox. How are you liking the Macbook?

Certain ISP's will record actions done through tor since it's considered "sketchy". If you're at a coffee house I wouldn't worry too much as long as others are using the internet as well.

Yeah. It's a good thing to have. Anonymity, as far as I'm concerned, is a right worth exercising.
I'm loving the MacBook Pro. It's glorious.

Yeah, I don't trust AIM's off-the-record, nor do I trust gmail's off the record on g-chat.

G-Chat's off the record only means that the conversation won't be logged in your "Chat" folder thing.
And while Pidgin is cool because of the encryption, I find the interface to be... Craptastic. I really like Digsby but the developers couldn't really give a fuck if their users want encryption, people have been requesting it for 2 years.

i recently switched to pidgin after using trillian for many years.
I think i like trillian a little bit better, but its about the same. I haven't looked through the pidgin plugins yet.

Might wanna give Digsby a try too. Has a very clean look and feel but it definitely does lack a bit on the plugins and functionality.

Giving Pidgin a shot now. I agree with Gumby, the interface looks...eh... dated. I'm all about private convos though, thanks for the heads up.

I've been using pidgin, and while it might look dated, I really don't care. I'm the kind of person to prefer functionality over aesthetics
