Bulk straw grow...question on birdseed cakes..
    #13004681 - 08/04/10 11:15 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I am preparing a straw tek grow using shroomgods method for growing on straw. I am awaiting my syringes to arrive so I am beginning to prepare the materials I will need for the colonization portion of the grow. I need some advice on how to prepare my jars...such as how many jars to inoculate, will any birdseed be suitable, what to expect when sterilizing the jars, colonization process in birdseed, and how to crumble the cakes in the straw. Any advice would be helpful at this point!

Well, really it all comes down to:

1) How deep of a substrate you want

2)The length and width of the tub you'll be putting it all in,measured how ever many inches the top of the substrate will be from the bottom of the tub.

3) The spawn:bulk ratio you want to use.

His tek calls for filling the tub up with 5" to 10" of straw for a 4" substrate depth.

If you do an 18 gallon monotub with this tek you'll want to use maybe 3-6 quarts of spawn.

I've never worked with straw but I have to ask...why not use some other additives such as Horse poo, coco coir/vermiculite,etc.?

Well I was planning on using the 35 gallon tub as described in the tek but I'm not sure how many jars to use without overdoing it.... I'm only using straw because he uses it in his tek and says it works out well when growing bulk.

I'd recommend Damion5050's Coir tek for bulk grows.

1 brick of coir,2 quarts of vermiculite.Place in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket and dump 4 to 4.5 quarts of boiling water in the bucket and place the lid on for 30-60 minutes. After the 3-60 minutes is up come back and stir everything up really well, then place the lid back on for 2-4 hours. When the 2-4 hours is up check the temperature at the core of the substrate,if it is below 80° F dump the bulk substrate (saving a little) in your tub,add your grain spawn and mix thoroughly into your bulk substrate, add the last quart of grain spawn and lightly cover with the little bit of bulk substrate you saved.Place the lid on the monotub and place in a trash bag for 10-14 days.

After the monotub has fully colonized remove from the trash bag, remove tape from the holes and stuff loosely with poly fill,or leave the holes unobstructed and just mist more frequently.

Damion5050's coir tek is based around a 18 gallon monotub which is 72 quarts.A 35 gallon tub is 140 quarts.

With his tek you get roughly 10 quarts of coco coir/vermiculite bulk substrate, which you would then add 5 quarts of grain spawn too for a total of 15 quarts substrate. This will give an 18 gallon mono about a 4" deep substrate.

For a 35 gallon monotub I would just double Damion5050's coir tek...2 bricks coir,4 quarts vermiculite,8-9 quarts of boiling water.Do it just as you would for the regular tek.Afetr the center of the substrate is below 80° F add it to the tub (saving some in the bucket) then add 8-9 quarts of grain spawn and mix thoroughly, then add your last 1-2 quarts of grain spawn and then lightly cover with the left over bulk substrate you saved.Put tape over the holes, place in a trash bag and let colonize for about 2 weeks.Once the substrate has fully colonized remove from the trash bag, remove tape from the holes and loosely stuff with polyfill or leave unobstructed and mist more frequently.

Okay I looked up that tek and it does seem to be a better method. I think I will just double his measurements as you said... What type of grain should I use in my jars? Amount of each component in the jars?

I know you aren't even close to this point yet, but I can tell you the most crucial step in this process will be the proper pasteurization of the straw.

The grain is irrelevent. Wbs is cheap. Rye is less mess and better quality. Either way will work fine. If you get wbs, get one without cracked corn. You'll save yourself some hassle dealing with all that stickiness.

cool thanks...do you think one syringe is enough to inoculate ten quart jars for me?

Easily- with spores, less is more.
Use 1/4 to 1/2 mL per jar, that's plenty.

Hi mushies.
Please watch, it's quite interesting:

It's just an advertising video for a DVD collection on shroom cultivation but it might give you an idea...

And maybe this one just as an inspiration

Plus I have been asking myself if you can colonise bulk substrate from Liquid Culture very well... Any recommendations appreciated

No, not well. LC -> grain -> bulk.

The laundry basket idea was BRILLIANT!!! I might just have to use that method with straw because it looks like it worked out so well....Also who know what the best strain to grow in straw is? or what strain seems to colonize the best in straw?

OK. Never mind... I'm getting a shroombox from the netherlands and I'm asking myself what the odds are. Let's give it a try.

I knew I would help you with that one, mushies.  :lolsy:  :fishgun:  :sunny:
Concerning your question: Aren't all cube strains in general very robust and like many different substrates?
