Theory: Unhulled millet mixed with rye berries improves rye tek.
    #7432167 - 09/20/07 12:42 PM (16 years, 4 months ago)

My friend was recently buying his rye berries from a local organic food store, and the rye bin ran out when he was about 1/5 short of what he needed.

Having always used only rye, he had a hard time remembering what was equivalent.

Then he remembered millet, but unfortunately did not remember UNHULLED millet.

To fill out the last few pints he added some millet to the jars then topped with rye, intending to mix them up well before loading the PC.

Since my friend is always busy and sometimes forgetful, he did not mix the millet and rye, rather PCd the jars with the bottom pure unhulled millet, with rye berries on the top of the millet.

Of course the unhulled millet formed a rock at the bottom, and did not mix at all with the rye, but having gone through all that trouble, and not wanting to scrap the 8-12 jars containing the millet bottom, he went ahead and knocked them up as usual.

When it came time to check on the jars, he noticed a decided difference between the jars with hulled millet, versus those with pure rye.

The millet jars seemed about 50-75% faster to colonize the same amount of rye berry, although the myc did not want to colonize the millet itself, it seemed to thrive on top of it, seemingly drawing nutrients from it to aide in the colonizing of the rye berries.

My friend said he intends to fruit these from the jar, since the millet will not easily come out, and being curious about the millet rock as an ongoing nutrient reservoir.

He also intends to try 50/50 prepared rye and hulled millet, and comparing them to 100% rye jars.

Any thoughts? Could millet serve as a food source not mixed in with the substrate much in the same way the PCP tek works with polymers.
