cake outdoors
    #13002587 - 08/04/10 04:46 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

so I had a cake that was 85% colonized and the damned green mold showed up less than the size of half a dime... I took the cake outside, crushed it in a bed of pine straw and covered it with the straw under a bush. It will rain for the next two days, and its humid out... also 90F+ this afternoon. what are the chances I will see cubes, and if it DOES fruit outside, will they be safe for consumption?

Next time just put it in a little hole and cover it.

Yea they'll be safe to consume. Those temps are pretty high for cubes but it's not impossible that you'd see fruits. I wouldn't expect anything personally but it could always surprise you someday.

I lost some cakes to contams a while back and did something similar just for the hell of it...
I cut out the contaminated are (sour rot) placed em outside under a bush covered it with pulverized wet leaves.  rained a few days, ultra humid about 95 degrees outside, harvested three little shrooms off it.

Don't expect it to be productive by any means, but its a learning opportunity, so if you want to, give it a shot!  If not, toss it and start over.

They will prolly be ok to eat... Typically I dont but when I have, they have been OK...

I put three cakes outside in my mulch bed after first flush and crumbled them up. I also fed them some left over brf, but it took longer than two days to fruit. After about a week and a half I was able to harvest the first couple mushrooms that grew, a little over 30g wet, and 2 weeks later I got some more.. about 30g again. They havent been back since as the climate isnt exactly ideal for cubes here, but it was nice to be able to go out in my yard and find a tasty snack

Watch out for the damn slugs and other bugs though, they usually find them before I do.

Good luck!
