Fill tray with water, soak, drain well.

You shouldn't need to dunk before the first flush as all your moisture is contained within your bulk sub. Also no need to case if your growing cubes as there is no benefit. When you do dunk, fill the tray with water and hold it submerged with some sort of weight. When it comes time to drain it, use one hand to lean it up on its side in a sink or a bathtub and one to hold the sub in the tray and you sort of have to do this quick motion where you end up holding the tray upsidedown with both hands supporting the sub. It all really depends on how big your sub is because it is pretty strong on its own. For instance, a 12x12 inch sub would easily support its own weight by holding the tray upside down with one hand holding it in place. Kind of hard to explain but I hope this helps.

Both times I've tried to drain tubs, I've ended up breaking the substrate into pieces and dumping it in the sink.

Oh well, just picked it up and threw it back in where it belonged.

For my 6quart trays I tie some string around each end of the tray to hold the substrate in place.  Then I sit the tray under a very slowly running faucet for about four or five hours.

For Mono tubs you stick a large wooden dowel through the two substrate level holes. ~P~

EDIT: I first came across the idea to keep the tray under running water from a post by RR.

If, during the first flush, you've picked off most of the substrates surface and the project just isn't worth spending a lot of time on for you, you can just pour a little water in the tray while it sits in the FC.  Don't let it sit long- pour or extract that water out after a couple or a few hours.  Replace with more water if necessary.

You can also directly inject water into the substrate with a syringe.  I haven't done this very many times, but it does work.

....and don't over hydrate your substrate and allow it to get soggy.  ~P~
