Word.

There's an anti war protest in my town this weekend and their holding it at the memorial garden. I'm a regular of our local RSL and got the dope from one of the directors who said that even though he's not in favour of a war, he thinks the protest could have been held somewhere less sacred. I tend to agree with him. There ain't no fuckin respect anymore.

Lest we forget.

Out of curiosity, what do you think vets should get for their service?

Should all vets get the same?

I respect anyone that has actualy gone and fought for this government, I dont say for this country because it had no place in half of the wars it fought in. But Veterans deserve what Rich assed politicians have, a pension, if you served in a foriegn war, you deserve the support of the country you fought for...the widows of fallen soldiers as well, but at the same time remove the life long pensions of the political freaks in office, they already have money and why do they need a pension....

of course if you only served behind a desk somewhere in washington, then you should get a couple hundred a month...it's not like you really risked much....I feel much the same way about cops....they deserve our respect because of the jobs they do, many dont even support alot of the laws they have to uphold....

I respect veterans not because they went out and fought for freedom and democracy and blah blah blah all that BS. hell... i have more respect for the men who bled in the jungles of nam for no reason than those who fought hitler. at least if you're fighting hitler you know why you're out there dying, and you know it's a good cause.

i don't think it matters here whether the fighting is for a good cause or a bad cause. they're out there killing and dying because uncle sam said so. the boys who got drafted and sent to nam were victims of our own government. it was a pointless war, sold to a paranoid public by politicians wishing to further their political and financial aims.

i don't respect them because they fought for uncle sam; i do respect them for fighting for certain ideals (such as independance, defense, emancipation, anti-fascism...)... but more, i just respect anyone who's had to go out and be part of a war, no matter why they were there. just think about the whole thing... war. it's crazy. war's a shitty situation, and i think anyone who's had it as a part of their life experience into it deserves recognition and respect.

The way I see it, where or when a vet served is irrelevant. Most people go into the military as kids, and come out with experiences that 99% of them could never have guessed would happen, many of which are very traumatic.

At the very least, you should get the respect you've earned, especially from those who could not or would not make the sacrifice you did.

Not to mention a host of other benefits vets deserve, particularly combat veterans.
