Perlite under my casing!!!

I've been putting a layer of perlite under my casing to help with my straw, it seems to help as my perlite casings are to colonizing faster!!!
I was having problems with my straw being too wet, straw is a bitch to wring out by hand, i'm using a nylon laundry bag to pasteurize my straw and it does not drain well, it will let pools of water out, but leaves it still very wet even after 24hrs..
anyone else do this???
hope it helps someone!!
over and out!

I'm not sure that I understand. Are you saying that the perlite helps to drain the excess moisture from the straw after it has been cased?
I drain my straw the same way that you do and occasionally have problems with it being too wet.

Yeah,, the problem with wet straw is that it forms stale patches against the plastic( on the bottom of the rubbermaid container ) and creates problems.
By having the perlite on the bottom, it lifts the straw up off the bottom and alows the exess water to be dispersed by the perlite..
Might not be worth the trouble,,, but it seems to help so far!!.. can't hurt!
PS: Is this making sense yet!??? hard to explain when you are baked!!

Makes sense. I'll have to give it a try.

this is an interesting idea, as far as straw being too wet, i always stick ny bag of freshly drained straw in the oven on 170 with the door open for like 1 hour. this keeps it at exactly 145 degrees and seems to get the moisture perfect, same for poo but the poo takes about 2.5-3 hours.

Hmm.. that's a new one!! cool.. i will try that out!
I was also thinknig of spinkling dry verm. within the casing as one builds it's layers... but was afraid of drying it out too much!!

or else just stick your bag of pasteurised straw in the washing machine on "spin" for 5 mins, works great for me:)
