Beautiful Yellow Bolete with Scabers? Xanthoconium? Edulis!?
    #12992958 - 08/02/10 08:35 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Habitat: Central NJ USA under oaks
Pores: Bright yellow
Stem: 8cm long, 3-4cm thick with dark red scabers
Cap:12cm wide, thick and meaty, pink to light red/brick colored.
Spore print color: n/a
Bruising: None noted
Other information: Simply a stunning fungus. Brilliant yellow pores.

I can't quite key this out, but it was so thick and meaty that I'm tempted to place it in B. edulis, or at least a butter bolete.

No ID needed on the steak: it's a ribeye, Bos taurus.

Nobody??

I'd probably put this in Leccinum, but the species eludes me.

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.

thank you thank you... it was a wonderful find... and I ate it within two hours of collecting. It was so juicy and tender. Boletes are so colorful and beautiful.

Funny story: I have a new roommate who just got back from Afghanistan, and staying with us for the next month. He's just learning about my mushroom obsession, and always looks at me like I'm nuts when I start whooping and hollering when I find something like this. I brought this home, and told him that I couldn't wait to eat it. It was so brilliant that he was afraid to touch it Being the Army guy that he is, he whips out a huge knife and starts poking at it! I was like, "Dude, it's a mushroom--it won't bite you." My other roommate was convinced that it was poisonous because it was so brightly colored... lol... noobs.

Anyway.. no clue regarding the species?

The bright yellow tubes suggest you have Boletus auriporus.

Happy mushrooming!
