Anyone use popcorn regularly?
    #12995773 - 08/03/10 12:36 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

I see everyone saying just go to rye berry, but does anyone use popcorn regularly with success?

I do, and have plenty of success, I can't get a hold of rye in my location so I use popcorn instead, Ive thought about using wheat but I'm not sure if it's a viable replacement because I haven't tested it.

Fucking popcorn

I have used it in the past.  I personally prefer rye or wbs.  Popcorn is just  apain in the ass to get the right moisture IME.

At ninja wheat berries work fine

I love rye but it can be a bitch to find or extremelly expensive.  I pay about $.70/pound but I have seen lots of ppl paying over double that.  So for like 5-6 pounds of rye I could buy 40 lbs of WBS.  Im a cheap bastard so you know where this is going

Dude, popcorn is an expensive option in my part of the world.

I use plain 'ol wheat grains on a regular basis, with great sucess.

Although i do prefer a balanced diet of WBS more spawn points better mix, but the wheat will do the job if spawned to poo/coir or whatever.

Popcorn seems to be more trouble with its hard shell as far as penetration of heat and sterilization techs. Rye has a softer and smaller shell and  is easier to use with better results as far as im concerned.  And its smaller so its many more points of inoculation when using it to super spawn bulk substrates.:bobmarley:

As I said in my first post Fucking popcorn.  Use popcorn as a last resort.  IME it takes forever after you spawn so even tho it is fast in the jar it still takes it's time after that.  The flushes arent as prolific as say wbs or rye and it contams pretty easily.

I find it pretty fast if you knead the popcorn instead of shaking

I disagree with every single reason RR lists in that thread.

The kernel size doesn't waste space in the jar cuz u can fill the jar up higher.

The kernels don't dry out any faster or slower than any other grain.

The fewer number of inoculation points does not appear to have any affect whatsoever on colonization time.

Popcorn also does not contaminate any faster or slower than any other grain, and is not hard at all to prepare. I find the contaminate argument especially ridiculous.

Perhaps it's slightly less nutritious than some other grains. But it's widely available and super easy to work with because the grains come loose so easily for g2g transfer, shaking, and spawning. Cost-wise it's a little expensive comparative to other grains.

Most of the arguments against pcorn are stupid and unproven. Try it and you'll see that I'm right.

I should have also posted, if you do or have done popcorn, how did you start the culture?  MS/AGAR/LC/ETC

lc works great as with nething. g2g and agar work well. never tried spores. I imagine it would work but would be pretty slow.
