safe light in mono tek 2

Dr.scifi's Lighting Tek This is an idea I came up with to keep my grow closet from leaking to much light. It also allows you to use more direct lighting without risk of fire or water getting in the bulb.
Materials Needed
- 1-Qt Jar/w lid
1-Thermoset Cleat Socket Lampholder 1-6' cheap extension cord 1-pack of 1/4" screws
Step 1
Draw circle around the jar and cut hole in the lid.

I use a serrated kitchen knife to drill and cut the hole.

To cut it out with out cracking the plastic cut an x then divide one segment into 2 pieces. Start cutting at the 2 small segments at a 45 deg. angle to the plastic.

Step 2
Set the Socket Lampholder on a jar lid and trace something that looks like this. Then cut it out as shown.

Step 3
Cut one end of the extension cord off leaving the plug end on and wire up the Socket Lampholder.

Step 4
Attach the Socket Lampholder to the jar lid using the 1/4 screws you may need to make the holes larger on the lampholder.

Step 5
Thread the jar into the lid this should be a tight fit if you cut correctly.

Step 6
Put a bulb in the lampholder and slide it in the jar. Last thing is to screw on the lock ring then plug it in.

Assembled

Light on

Light on in the dark

This tek is meant to complement Damion5050's Coir Tek. http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11916595
Hope this helps some of you like you have helped me.

Haha thats pretty crafty. I just siliconed a strip of plexiglass on the lid of my fc, put a 6500 k bulb in my fluorescent aquarium light, and mounted it onto the lid with home made brackets. The only light that gets out is through the venting slits in the top of the light. Which isn't much. Does the jar provide enough insulation to keep the bulb from heating up the fc too much? Thats the only problem i could see with this.

Also, you might want to check out other forms of lighting, like fluorescent tubes. Standard incandescent bulbs don't have the right color temperature. You want 6500 k for best results. Some people have success with incandescent though, so if it works for you, by all means go for it. Im not trying to rag on the tek, just trying to be helpful. Thanks for the simple, ingenious tek.

The jar works perfect I have fruited 4 times with it and works wonderful. The bulb was one that I found online that claimed to be a sealed fixture rated cfl in 5000k. It turned out that it was not rated for sealed fixture but it runs cool with the vent in the top. Will be getting 6500k cfl when these burn out or I want to try something new.
this is the bulb

Well im glad to hear its working out so well. Right now im on the fence as to whether or not im gonna build and start up another tub. If i decide to, i just might have to give this a shot, instead of buying another fluorescent light. I've got all the materials for this around the house. That bulb looks good, btw. Much closer to 6500 than the standard house bulb. I thought the light leaking out looked much more on the blue end of the spectrum than a "normal" incandescent

It is a good working cfl that seams to be doing a good job. So far with the coir tek and the cfl I have netted over 9oz out of 2 tubs dry still working on making that better that was with no dunk. I will be dunking this time though.

Yeah I'm concerned about heat. My tubs stay at 70-72 on there own heat production and they're MSG's next to a window and its only 55-60 outside.
I dont even heat my house.

Yeah, and I'm taking temp at substrate level.
My light solution is going to be a 2 foot t5 6500k bulb. Getting it today or tomorrow. I just don't feel that I get enough light through my window here. Its cloudy often.

I don't think a bulb in the lid will affect temps at substrate level, but might boost airflow.

The light has not effected temp at all. I have had condensation on the outside of the jar but no more than the inside of the tub. As far as boosting air flow I don't know it is a very tight fit I have to press and thread the jar into the lid.

I think by "boosting airflow" he was talking bout heat rising and through convection current it would pull in a lil more FAE through the lower holes.

Genius man, thats so happening tomorrow, I love new projects. With the vented lid and the jar I wouldn't think it would get more than a few degrees warmer. How much probably depends how big the tub is too. What size is your tub Dr.Scifi?

It is an 18 gallon and no internal temp change i think you could go as small as 10 gallon and not have any temp problems just don't know if the light housing would clear the shrooms with out touching.
