I do want to get them off the floor but counter space is really at a premium here. Milk crates sound like a great idea but I'm not sure how to get them, wonder if the supermarkets will give them to you if you ask.
They won't. Don't you have a spare bucket or cooking pot or cardboard box or something?

Never heard of drain holes in the bottom or concerns thereabouts, always drain them manually after the post flush dunk. When spawning I mist rubbing alcohol into the clean empty bin before laying in the half of the bag, I've found this works better than a few loops of tape, especially over time as the sub wants to pull the bag when it contracts. Good luck

I always just leave it in the bin, making sure the bag is still draped around the edges when I finish draining it

I don't see why taping the bag to the side would be a problem as long as you leave slack for the bag to adhere and shrink to the substrate. It doesn't really shrink that much, what, maybe 1/4 inch?

it's not a problem, but it's not a benefit either. why wouldn't u just leave it freestanding?

The substrate can shrink way more than 1/4".
I've had them shrink 1" (maybe a little more) all the way around after a big first flush.
I tried to find a photo showing the shrinkage but couldn't really find one that showed it clearly.

This thing is less than half its original size.
Notice the liner is freestanding. I don't understand how taping it to the sides helps.
That duct tape you see is holding the liner together, it's not attached to the walls. It's black plastic and some tape. Cheaper/sturdier than trashbags.
