ponderings about low seratonin and sleep

You know how some people always have to sleep with the tv on? and other people have to sleep in absolute darkness?
I'm wondering if people's sleep schedules are subconscious attempts at regulating serotonin.
also i was reading that seratonin production is nearly completely shut down during REM sleep. wtf? how come our dreams aren't incredibly dysphoric? is that why i feel like shit when i wake up most mornings? (low natural serotinin and nighttime production shutdown leading me to wake up with really low seratonin?)
maybe people who stay up late, and sleep during the day are trying to minimize melatonin production and keep serotonin levels up.
I was reading alot of it is stored. perhaps the body can activate it and start using it really quick.
makes no sense. i have to read more about melatonin. last time i was into it there wasn't really any info on what it did.

During sleep the mind is very active, unravelling things and strengthening memory, and if we stop sleeping we die.
From what I recall, it's during sleep that seratonin is recycled and when you do an all nighter it gives you a mild euhporic buzz. There's a lot to it, scientifically not well undrstood.. but im pretty sure low serotonin isnt the reason you feel like shit in the morning

I know i sometimes feel weird in the morning because the transition from a super vivid dream to the waking state can be rough and id rather stay in that world.

I saw an x-files episode where the military was giving soldiers some medication that made them stay up forever.... Because it constantly recycled their serotonin, but that means these people haven't slept in like 20 years. :O spooky Mulder!

I remember that ep. I re-watched seasons 2-7 recently. X-Files is greatness

It has more to do with the circadian and ultradian rhythms.

I experience this somewhat often...
Going from a vivid lucid dream to the waking state quickly can be rather odd & off putting...Sometimes when this happens the "real world" feels almost artificial & dreamy for the first hour or so that i am awake....Sorta hard to explain

what has more to do with circadian rhythms? waking up feeling shitty? the amount of light people prefer when going to sleep?

Both actually. And much more. Here's a short read about it. Ernest Rossi has written quite a bit on that.

interesting. i've always had this, didn't realize it was classified as a disorder:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-24-hour_sleep-wake_syndrome
it takes me about 2 months to go all the way around the clock.
could you link me to something about preference for light while sleeping and its relation to low/high serotonin?

I'll have to look into that, cause I remember having some pdfs on it but it's going to take a while because my files aren't organized properly.

If you're seretonin is depleted, it can cause a range of effects which in include but are not limited to, eating disorders, sleep disorders, mental disorders, and memory function. Get some L-tryptophan pills to support your bodies production of seratonin, and some 5-htp to boost your levels up for the the first few weeks, then go to the L-tryptophan. Until the supplements start effecting you, i'd get some good indica weed, some chamomille tea, and some melatonin pills. Also 25 mg of diphenhydramine(benadryl) couldn't hurt
