Question on pasteurization
    #12981391 - 07/31/10 02:59 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I made a mix of composted cow manure (I've read this is not ideal), vermiculite, used coffee grinds from starbucks and gypsum.

My question, is how would I pasteurize a small amount of substrate like this?

I've got 3 quarts WBS that are at 100% and well consolidated, Penis Envy 6 - that I want to spawn to this mix.

I tried using the search function, but couldn't really find an answer for this.

Thanks,
PLURfekt

Mix to field capacity, load into jars, put jars in a stock pot and fill the stock pot w/ water so the jars about 2/3 submerged in water. Put a meat thermometer in one of your jars to measure the inside temperature of the sub. Keep this in the 140-150 range for an hour. That's all there is to it.

You are gonna need your self a thermometer, buddy.  Go to your local dollar store and pick up a meat thermometer for a buck or 2.  Keep track of those temps.  Your face is not a valid thermometer.

:aweoverdose:

I'll go to the store later tonight.  I've made plenty of money this week so it's cool.

Hamloaf.. your avatar is so damn sexy.

I hope leaving the mix overnight won't affect anything.

I always thought the red head was pretty, but damn..

For some reason I was thinking it would go bad....like grains.

Lmao.  Yeah, nevermind.

I've been smoking off some of this grape ape and purple kush (which is amazingly frosty and purple) andd I'm pretty illiterate at the moment.

I made about 3.5 quarts of substrate and I have 3 quarts of spawn.

I'm probably gonna make 2.5 more, and go for 1:2 ratio.

My first monotub will be ready to fruit soon, very exciting.

Insert your hand into the water for 1 full second. When you pull it out, if it's a nice bright pink and you screamed like a little girl during the insertion, you're at the right temperature. If your hand is blistered and nauseatingly red the water is too hot and you should go see a doctor.

I think I'll spend the $2 instead.  I've got all kinds of mycology supplies to pick up.. already dropped 100$ past few days.

I hope cow manure works out, as opposed to horse manure.

I was also told not to buy it around here (Wisconsin).....

Field aged or store bought cow manure?  Cow shit is second best apposed to horse manure.  Cow shit will do great but you do know, cow manure alone cannot be used in the same fashion as horse manure?  Which is one of the attributes that make horse manure superior to cow manure.  You will have to add your cow manure to pasteurized wheat straw, cut to 3 inch strips, at a 70/30 wheat straw/cow manure ratio.

I thought you had to mix the H poo as well as the cow poo, also, aren't pasteurizing temps between 160 and 180 (Ideally 170)?

Hpoo is more fibrous, while cow manure will just become muddy and yeck. That's why it's suggested that you mix it with a filler. Vermiculite or straw would both work fine, but you could even use newspaper, just anything to make it less muddy. As far as pasteurization temps 140-170, but RR now suggests not going over 160. Staying on the lower end helps retain more beneficial bacteria and uses less energy.

Horse manure can be used by it's self.  Cow manure should be mixed with wheat straw, cut to 3 inch strips, at a 70/30% wheat straw/cow manure ratio, then pasteurized, due to the consistency of cow manure.  You can opt to buffer horse manure with vermiculite and add additives.  Ideal pasteurizing temps are 140-160 degrees ferinheight.  170-175 will be fine.  Don't go over 180.

Cori is pretty resilient against contamination, but I have no doubt in my mind that it couldn't get contaminated. But the gerneral rule is if your bulk grow gets contaminated that it was most likely your spawn that was contaminated.

While it works for coir, the boiling water in a bucket method is not proper pasteurization, especially for any bulk substrate other then coco coir (h.Poo,cow poo, straw, etc.)
