It's a monotub and you've only got the top surface to fruit from. Does the surface has a lot of bare grain on it? Exposed grains don't pin well.
You normally wouldn't case straw. But then people don't often do straw in monotubs like that.
Here's one that I did. Yes it pinned ok without a casing:

I felt it would have benefited from a casing layer tho, if even just some verm for a better surface texture. If I were to do straw in a mono again (and I wouldn't, baskets rule), I would do some simple casing layer on top.
I'd like to see a pic of one of RR's straw monotubs pinning and hear some details about it.
I wonder if this is where weighting down the colonizing substrate might help produce a substrate better able to fruit uncased.

You should try to compress the straw for colonization in any case.

Cool. Will do. I have not used straw yet, but some of the strains that I hope to do prefer it, so....
Take care,
JD

yesterday i looked at the straw and in 1 corner there was this toxic light green spot which took around 3 centimeter cubic,.......
here it is,the pic is'nt sharp but the green is toxic light green:

i removed around 8 centimeter from the straw block in lenght and placed some salt where i cutted it. also sprayed some pure 3% peroxide over that place.
do i have a change for this? or is this block un savable? (i hope i ca save this...)

this block straw is now 6 days in te fc, found this green shit yesterday evening. there are no pins yet...
i moved it to the outside in my garden on an place out of the sun(21 graden here), to prevent it spreads in my house.
i let it wait there, and see if the green continues. i dont hope so...... i did not see new green after i cut that piece out, lets hope it goes ok

i think this experiment is lost.....
it keeps spreading over the whole straw block, also now there are nasty black spots.
im gonna burry this in the park on an not sunny place and hope the mycelium will spread out there in the ground. maybe it wil survive there and maybe (little change)it will give some shrooms.
unfortunally..... failed.
