Cubensis PES Hawai on straw log/failed

this is my current experiment/grow first time on straw. i get this strain from fsre. this strain is named''Cubensis PES Hawai'',let me make it clear with this comment from fsre: http://fsre.nl/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=163&Itemid=57 ========================================================= This strain is actually not a native to the Hawaiian Islands, but it comes from a Hawaiian spore supplier and so it was named. The exact origin of this strain is unknown but it's impressive fruits have kept it in popular circulation.
It usually produces larger sized fruitbodies that somewhat resemble the Golden Teacher. It's not certain if there is a relation between the GTs and this one, but they do share some similar characteristics. ================================================================ i started this sunday the 25th of july. it all begun with pasteurizing the straw :

used an garbage bag full with gates from a fork for the straw:

the straw in the bag before pasturation:

here i let the water drip out and let it cool to room temparature after pasturation:

this are the ones im gonna use for this project:

(the coffeefilters are only to hold an extra polyfilter i placed on the lid and nothing more)
the jars shaking allready and the straw, the box and some other things:

here i insert the straw and collonized rye ,3 layers of straw and 2 layers of the collonized rye.

after that i placed some plastic with little holes over it and packed it in like a baby

placed another plastic over the container self:

packed it in an garbage bag for the light keeps darker. also i placed this up my current in use incubator where the temparature is 27 graden continu.

this was 5 days later(yesterday)

this was today 10 hours ago:(with the plastic, sorry for the not so clear pic,i have light problems on my ''camera''(htc)

i also have a question about the moisture when i dont case it. is there enough moisture in the straw for the first flush? or is it no problem when i mist this time to time right over the mycelium it self @ top of the straw?

This is awesome grow. I love it.
I didn't find straw monotubs to pin very well. You might consider casing it.
You're asking about misting, you're not going to fruit that yet are you? It looks beautiful but it's not ready to fruit.

thnx man!
no not fruiting now,im waiting till its fully colonized. i shall case this later,i think its better to keep the moisture in the straw higher. also with later misting it gives an extra protection.
the mycelium grows very fast,i give this maybe 4 days more from now and it will be fully colonised.
i have this strain from fsre holland and they named it''cubensis hawai''. dont know if its real hawai but ok....at least this one is agressive in growing i see!
i shall update this log time to time.
peace!

There's plenty of moisture in the straw for first flush. In addition, straw fruits better uncased. Next time, you'll have better luck with straw if you chop it finer, and place a weight on top to hold it slightly compressed as it colonizes. RR

thank you for the good advice RR, i shall not place a casing for the first flush. but is it better to case after that first flush or can i also dunk it after the first flush and use no casing over it?
i really wonder, i readed more logs but one say its better with and one says its better not cased. i saw all you videos and works and i really respect your knowledge and experience which you share with us.
also next time i shall cut the straw in little'r pieces, some are to long. this is my first straw grow ever in my life and i prefer learning it good then have a good harvest first. cause thats the way we can learn it best,by making mistakes and learn from that mistakes ;-)

It's a monotub and you've only got the top surface to fruit from. Does the surface has a lot of bare grain on it? Exposed grains don't pin well.
You normally wouldn't case straw. But then people don't often do straw in monotubs like that.
Here's one that I did. Yes it pinned ok without a casing:

I felt it would have benefited from a casing layer tho, if even just some verm for a better surface texture. If I were to do straw in a mono again (and I wouldn't, baskets rule), I would do some simple casing layer on top.
I'd like to see a pic of one of RR's straw monotubs pinning and hear some details about it.

thnx for this advice, that was also what i was thinking off. the surface have more straw,i covered it in layers(straw, myc, straw, myc, straw)
i think that it would be better with casing in the current mono tub i colonize them in right now. since the monotub have a to low rv i guess,so the subsrate would dry out.
but i also have an extra shotgun terrarium over where i shall put it in. so i think on that way it haves 95% rv,so that the straw dont need an casing?
so i think its better to place it when fully colonized in the shotgun terrarium for fruiting?

Sure if you can take the whole thing out and put it in a good fruiting chamber. How big is it tho, is it gonna cover up all the perlite in the shotgun?
Blocks of straw fruit better like this than in tubs from what I've seen.
This is a huge block of straw I fruited inside 2 110 quart tubs taped together into one giant tub and made into a shotgun fruiting chamber. (Standard hole size/spacing)

i think it will cover around 50 %,so i guess there is enough space.
nice pic you have there, good idea! this give me an insparation for a later experiment.
this is my first grow ever,i also have made an big wooden box with 2 shotgun boxes in it with an airpump for some air and an 8 watt fluoscerent lamp(energy bulb). this box had some problems with humidity since i also had monotubs in that box which dried out the containers in it with rye with casing. now since i maked the boxes to shotguns the pins are showing.
right now i have 3 shotgun terrariums over so enough room for more experiments;-) i shall use one for the straw block. i shall place this in my living room.
also,do i have to case this block after the first flush in the shotgun or is no casing needed after flushes in this shotgun? i guess there is now enough rv for it? or maybe only a dunk after each flush?
greets, henk600

today pic 10 minutes ago.
some straw is to long and i can see this make it need a little longer to colonize.(as you can see on the long straws up.)
i think over 2 days i can transform this to the fruiting room. if this will goes good i am planning to use this technique also for the future. then i also shall do what anonjon did with the baskets, this looks to me as an very promising technique for great big flushes.
i shall keep update this topic as much as i can till the end.

update. i placed the straw to the fruiting chamber. some long straw on the surface is not covered by my but i think this will also colonize in days. thats a lesson for me to cut the straw shorter next time...
ok here are some pics:

now i will wait and keep the rv as high as i can in the shotgun ter. i really cant wait to see it grow shrooms but ok ,patience haha.

are those quarter inch holes? they look small to me. don't sacrifice too much fae for humidity. it's just as important.
