I picked up a HEC Case with 550w PSU, AMD Phenom X4 9850 Black Edition, ASUS M4A785 motherboard, and 2x1GB G-Skill DDR2-800 for $220.
Add $100 for an ATI HD4850 graphics card and $50 for 2 more sticks of RAM.
Total : $370

I prefer nVidia for Folding@home since they perform way better, but I prefer ATI for actual gaming.
Though, ATI drivers have been shitty lately.

My "old" PC is an Athlon 64 X2 5600+, 2GB DDR2-667, ATI HD4650. It cost me a total of $700 including upgraded graphics every year for the last 3 years. Sucks that I spent more on upgrading my AGP graphics card every year than it cost to build this new PC.
Have you tried unlocking extra cores on your Phenom X2?

It was a newegg combo deal. The case, PSU, cpu, motherboard and RAM were bundled.
The extra RAM and ATI card were bought from newegg too, though not on sale.
It should all arrive on Thurs/Fri.

hahaha, its okay i can see where the extra monies for me cost, besides everything i bought dropping 20-50$ each piece.
yeah, no extra cores
rocking at 3.9 though!
actually, i was able to boot with extra cores at 3.4ghz (.2 about stock), but it glitched out pretty quick. i could probably get it stable at a slower speed but i like the dual 3.9 better.
gigabyte mother board = gay.
great for the price but my integrated graphics is burning out after 6 months. Now do i want to not have a computer for 3-4 weeks while i wait to get it replaced?

Here's the link for the Case/PSU/CPU/MOBO/RAM deal.
$225 PC Deal
Newegg notified me that the HD4850 I ordered was gonna be back-ordered, so I switch to an XFX nVidia GTS250 512MB for $130 ($90 after rebate).
I wish the ATI 5770's weren't so damn expensive but the nVidia card has great reviews.
Had to order a CPU cooler since the CPU is OEM and doesn't included the heatsink/fan. I got a cheap $20 cooler so I hope it can handle the 125w quad core.
Probably won't have all the parts to assemble it until Mon/Tues next week.

Nice budget build. It is tough to keep a budget that is for sure. I just built a system for 600 but had a case keyboard, mouse and hard/dvd drives already. Very happy with my AMD II X4 955 and 260 gtx. Not to mention win7, nice change from the expiring XP.
Here is a link I found elsewhere that is pretty handy. 400-1500 dollar builds. At least something to look at and build around it with better deals/sales. http://www.eggxpert.com/forums/thread/172986.aspx
