Odd tray growth... [Pics]
    #12962499 - 07/27/10 04:49 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Hey folks,

I made a tray that is a mix between two strains.  It is almost completely colonized around the sides and the bottom (I would say about 99%) but towards the surface of the substrate has yet to be fully colonized (maybe 20%).  Why is this?  Does the mycellium waot to approach the surface until the bottom and sides can't colonize anymore?

That would be my guess.  I took a peak after about 2 1/2 weeks.  I used a lot of substrate and not a ton of spawn.

The sub could be a little dry, wierd its taken this long, Id leave it see if it fully colonizes the top, then fruit it, otherwise it will contaminate IMO

Could be, but I don't think so.  There seemed to be plenty of moisture when I opened it up.

I only put one layer of rye grain, and the sub depth is bout 3 inches or so.  The tray is larger than you would think.

I just found it strange that it hasn't colonized the top like it has the bottom.  It has nearly completely colonized the middle, bottom and sides, but not the top.  Very odd.  In my experience, the opposite is most often true.

Well, it has colonized the bottom, middle and sides, but the top is still no where near complete.

This is purely an experimental tray.  I wonder if strain competition, which will even occur using one culture, has hindered the growth of the mycellium at the surface.

I just don't get how it can colonize the bottom, sides and middle but not the top.  Very strange.

Well, the tray stalled due to cob web growth.  Oh well.  I just had some extra spawn that I couldn't use, so I figured I would try trays.  This is what happens when you open your tray too many times.  I also feel my pasteurization with this batch was maybe a little lazy.

I have a couple smaller trays on the way.  We will see.

I took the contaminated tray and treated the cob web areas with some H2O2.  It immediately receded.  I decided instead of flipping it over and attempting to fruit a less than 100% colonized tray in my SGFC to make a small outdoor bed.

I dug a small hole under a tray that was large enough to fit the colonized block in.  I filled the bottom of the hole with about 3/4-1" of medium grade verm.  I then hydrated the verm.  I placed the block on top of the hydrated verm.  I then sprinkled verm all over the block and around the sides.  I then hydrated this verm.  After the second verm layer, I placed a nice bedding of grass and leaf clippings on top of the hole, block and verm.  I then hydrated the grass covering.  I plan on watering it every morning.

So, what do you guys think?

I sure hope so.  This tray has been sitting around colonized, well as much as it could colonize with the cob web, for about 2 weeks now.  It should have had plenty of time to consolidate.

Hopefully it has the urge to fruit by now.  I suspect I will see something within the next couple weeks.

The tree I buried the tray under is perfect.  On the side facing west it has a natural alcove, which was formed by the root structure of the tree.

I am just using some yard waste as a covering for it.  Are there any other suggestions?  I have plenty of peat moss, hydrated lime, vermiculite, perlite, coir, compost, etc.
