They're looking good. I was walking in woods and fields in another part of Wales, found no libs in the fields, having chosen that spot for altitude, type of grass, sheep shit and other factors that made it similar to my patch. Anyway the woods were jam packed but I came away with just a handful of nonsense (mainly Boletus luridus) so I could still climb fences.

cedar is the devil man. its the main reason why it took me sooo long to find them is that they use almost exclusively cedar wood chips in the landscaping here. any hardwod is good. fir will work too.

This'll be my FIFTH year hunting, but provided I find libs, only my second year finding.
Just shows you should stick at it. `

Found a couple of Pan. Subs today growing from dung in a horse pasture, some huge ones too. Spores are black so I am confident... my first ever active find. No libs though, though we had a decent bit of rain yesterday so hopefully the next few days will be interesting.

I found about 15 in a sheep field , they were littler bar a few ones but made the car journey and felt really nice and relaxed all night :-)
my other spot is not as high up so unsure to go picking, but the temp is right, there was nothing there last week bar a few indicator species.
BRING IT ON!

im hoping to find some libs this year, its still much too hot in the midlands for any mushrooms to grow at low altitude. i went on a "scouting run" today and had a look at all the fields i plan on hunting in, they look promising . has anyone had much luck finding libs at low altitude? most of the finds i have seen in old threads have been up on hills. is this only because people like to find them as early as possible?
i was reading up on UK cyans and have been trying to remember all the local places i have seen woodchippings, one spot i know is very promising because i saw alot of mushrooms on it last year. i have a few other spots in mind (including a horse training track that is about 2 miles of 5m wide woodchip path). am i right in thinking that cyans will only grow on woodchippings that have been bought from major suppliers where the spores are distributed? i see alot of woodchipping piles that are probly just from clearing local trees.
sorry for my horrible writing style. i can do maths, not writing.

I doubt altitude is the only explanation - or at least hilltops don't seem consistently best - more that valleys acquire their own likely weather systems and the weather in those microclimates can be more conducive for widespread sporulation (eg in a cool wind tunnel) and mycelial growth (eg if there is nearly constant rain and dew), and then you can factor in altitude as well. Any of those theories, for my part, are work in progress.

Yes I have a local spot which is prety much just above sea level! only thing is the season being much shorter and later here and getting slightly lesser yeilds, as with it being shorter grazed grass. its just recently started pissoing down and hope it carrys on and is sunny 2moro to go! piece!
ps. i sometimes venture up into the higher lands and go on hikes.
You be in luck then no doubt! ;-)
Glad to help!
oh and the cyans like CEDAR woodchips and ALDERwoodchips if that helps your research.

The libs will usually start first on the mountains and in the north because that's where it's coolest and wettest. Especially mountains in the North. However if you're on low ground in the South then you're pretty much out of luck for now I think and the weather forecast for the next week isn't great especially for the South, too warm and dry. It's always a long shot in August anyway for most, many people it seems don't find them properly until October. A nice spell of cool wet weather would make it interesting though.
Also hills with heathland/moorland grazed by sheep is generally the best place overall for libs from what I gather. Many of the big hauls seem to come from that kind of habitat. Thankfully there is a lot of such habitat within walking distance of me. I shall take a look up there soon.
