Wawawewa! End of July and they're popping up already. I'm impressed. Ahh, the joys of a completely average Summer (well, here in Northern UK anyway). Nice finds, time for me to go for a long wander in the fields .

I was looking for them too. Then was informed they don't grow in cold climate i.e. the U.k Sounds right

Psilocybe cyanescens DOES grow in the UK from woodchips. (The kind found around flower beds.)

A different species called Panaeolus cyanescens (= Copelandia cyanescens) does not, and only grows in tropical climates from dung.

They both contain psilocybin but have very different appearances and habitats. Hope that helps to clear up any confusion!

If I found some of these, how many would I have to eat to get the same effects as about 50 liberty caps? I know they vary in size and weight but approximately? Are they the same strength per gram or are they stronger/weaker?
I'm sure I saw some last year but didn't bother picking them because I was only just getting familiar with liberty caps, so I wanted to concentrate on them alone. But I think I might branch out a bit this season.
Thanks

Thanks. Yea I will. Do you know the names of these lookalikes? And do they grown in the same places as cyans?

Anyone worry about the class "A" status of actives while picking?
I pick edibles and haven't touched lib caps for a few years, but I have been approached by landowners, dogwalkers etc several times and been accused of looking for psil. species though, I have a shady aura or something..
I always pick on public land but some people are just too nosey.. In the good old days there were no mobiles so you didn't really have to worry about people calling the fuzz in the middle of nowhere, also shrooms were semi-legal a few years back.. good old loopholes.

Galerina marginata - contains amatoxins like destoying angels etc. I'm not sure about the strength of cyanescens - http://www.chezshaw.demon.co.uk/work/research/woodchips/woodchips.html ; page says 'they pack 5 times the alkaloids of semilanceata' unless he's talking per shroom or other alkaloids beside psilocin/psilocybin

Just chuck 'em down. A man standing next to a pile of picked mushrooms is very hard to form as the basis for a conviction. Different if they find a load in your house, too, or on your camera.

Honestly I don't know as I rarely weigh liberty caps.
From what I've read, fresh Psilocybe cyanescens has a greater proportion of psilocin which is unstable over time, so their potency diminishes faster than P. semilanceata which contains mostly psilocybin/no psilocin.
So cyans might be more potent when they are freshly picked but libs will store better. Not a definitive answer but it's my best guess. Both species are remarkably strong.

Personally if I found three or four now I wouldn't pick them but instead leave them to go through their life cycle and drop plenty of spores!

Good point, i think it's sometimes easy to forget about the class A status at times especially during a exciting find. It's not something i would worry about though as long as you discreet & make sure the area is quiet. The only thing SWIM would have to be careful of in my area is not to drop them all over the main road on the way home

yes check the graveyard, they are exellent places to find libs, lawns to as they are well mantained.
i often get just as mutch, somtimes more from private lawns and sutch than i do from the country.
the only reason animals help for libs is because they keep the grass short, well mantained land and even freshley grown turf can be exellent.
