I don't think they are libs, I've seen Stropharia semiglobata (dung roundhead) looking like them. Don't see nipple, stems look too straight and don't see the dark ring that often forms when dry around bottom. Weren't around dung by any chance were they...

The margin isn't dark but it isn't essential.  I have found some variant S. semiglobata but never elongated like that.  Some Pans get a bit lib shaped but not (that I can recall) with the wrinkled cap margin.  Panaeolus would be my second choice but I still think libs is likely.  That second shot is yelling it.

Just pulled out that mushroom again to see how it was drying, and a small, translucent worm wriggled out of it  :scat:

Threw it away. Eurgh.

I've been doing a bit of googling and it seems like it was probably a fungus gnat larva. It seems pretty ridiculous to be squeemish of them considering we eat all manner of insects just when you eat a biscuit, but that's irrational fears for you. Even so, I might stick any future mushrooms I pick in the microwave for a few seconds before I leave them out to dry, kill the bastards...

i am Desperate for spots in the south east UK, Ashford ideally.
I found a pretty small field with a stream next to it.. sheep normally there. Would that be a good spot?

Or higher alttitude?

Lay your mush out on  some newspaper or cardboard in front of a fan. I find that the worm thingys crawl out looking for more moisture.

They usually just shrivel up on the paper.

Sheep fields always produce the most 4 me and since it's early I can only assume higher elevation spots would be a good place to start.

think if you burn some tobacco in a dish like insense and hold the mushrooms over the smoke it will drive them out  MarĂa Sabina style , or so i've read.

From the midlands here too. Checked all my usual spots, nothing yet it seems. Loads of LBMs tho so conditions are right, just too early perhaps.

@Tex0gen - fields with livestock are good, but remember that the sheep/cows will munch them before we can get there. I usually go for golf/cricket pitches. The low cut grass makes them easy to see. You don't get very big ones tho.

Good luck all

At the golf course by me, rumour has it that they spray it with a fungicide. Used to be good pickings before that from what I here.

Northern UK semilanceata update: Checked last week and found nothing.  Just went for a look today, and yep they're popping up here now.  Not loads yet, found 40 or so.  Lots of rain forecast, looks like it could be the green light over the next couple weeks.

@ Base Icks - I've heard that before, but I don't think it's a regular thing. Every few years due to cost maybe. I certainly found plenty last year, and loads of LBMs this year so probably worth a check if your near one, sadly the mass of actual golfers has prevent a full hunt so far...

@jamster78 - didn't you post that before man? The last 2 pics are a definate hit. Look tasty in fact. The others are either too blurry to tell or not worth touching.
