Psilocybe cyanescens DOES grow in the UK from woodchips. (The kind found around flower beds.)

A different species called Panaeolus cyanescens (= Copelandia cyanescens) does not, and only grows in tropical climates from dung.

They both contain psilocybin but have very different appearances and habitats. Hope that helps to clear up any confusion!

If I found some of these, how many would I have to eat to get the same effects as about 50 liberty caps? I know they vary in size and weight but approximately? Are they the same strength per gram or are they stronger/weaker?

Honestly I don't know as I rarely weigh liberty caps.

From what I've read, fresh Psilocybe cyanescens has a greater proportion of psilocin which is unstable over time, so their potency diminishes faster than P. semilanceata which contains mostly psilocybin/no psilocin.

So cyans might be more potent when they are freshly picked but libs will store better. Not a definitive answer but it's my best guess. Both species are remarkably strong.

I've also found liberty caps in at least 3 different lawns/different locations, but only a few specimens. Inactives such as Marasmius oreades and Panaeolina foenisecii seem to be more popular on lawns, from my experience.

I find libs in much greater numbers in fields.

That's probably a Psathyrella species.

Go look for mushrooms in it and you will find out. How would we know?

Other inactive mushrooms I commonly see in Psilocybe semilanceata habitat:

Panaeolina foenisecii (very common, dark brown spore print)
Panaeolus papilionaceus (grows off dung, black spore print)
Conocybe apala (brown gills, rusty spore print)
Bolbitius vitellinus (yellow, slimy)
Stropharia semiglobata (also slimy)
Agrocybe pediades
Psathyrella species (brittle stems)
and assorted coprinoid mushrooms (inky caps), Mycena species and Hygrocybe species.

Contour lines on a regular old map will tell you your elevation.

Looks like a Mycena species. Keep looking!

The darker ones have more water in them. They all dry out the same eventually.

They are hygrophanous.

wait for someone with more experiance IDing tho...

I already said those are Conocybe apala.

The gill colour looks wrong for Conocybe, in my opinion.

That, and the fragile stems would lead me to believe they are a Psathyrella sp. instead. Hopefully someone else can give their input - LBMs aren't the easiest things to ID.

Thanks man.  These have no yellow nipple/spot at the top and have dark gills.  I asked for an ID in the main hunting forum and a TI said it was "a Psathyrella species", but didn't give any more specifics.  I'm not convinced, purely from that, even though I can easily believe they're not strictipes if someone with experience says so.

The TI was right - those are a Psathyrella species. It should have a black spore print. The fragile, white stems along with those dark (black) gills are what suggests Psathyrella to me.

Conocybe apala do have a similar looking stipe, but have a rusty brown spore print with cinnamon-brown gills. Check google images for the gill colour of this.

Psilocybe strictipes would have purple-brown spores like the other Psilocybe species.
