Well, I can't believe it's that time of year again  It comes around so fast. Don't think I've signed in since last November, but it only feels like about 2 weeks ago when we were last comparing finds.

Can't believe you found some already.

Psilocybe cyanescens DOES grow in the UK from woodchips. (The kind found around flower beds.)

If I found some of these, how many would I have to eat to get the same effects as about 50 liberty caps? I know they vary in size and weight but approximately? Are they the same strength per gram or are they stronger/weaker?

I'm sure I saw some last year but didn't bother picking them because I was only just getting familiar with liberty caps, so I wanted to concentrate on them alone. But I think I might branch out a bit this season.

Thanks

Thanks. Yea I will. Do you know the names of these lookalikes? And do they grown in the same places as cyans?

I'm not sure about the strength of cyanescens  - http://www.chezshaw.demon.co.uk/work/research/woodchips/woodchips.html; page says 'they pack 5 times the alkaloids of semilanceata' unless he's talking per shroom or other alkaloids beside psilocin/psilocybin

Thanks, that link isn't working but I've done a bit of research now anyway.

Asht0n said: From what I've read, fresh Psilocybe cyanescens has a greater proportion of psilocin which is unstable over time, so their potency diminishes faster than P. semilanceata which contains mostly psilocybin/no psilocin.

So cyans might be more potent when they are freshly picked but libs will store better. Not a definitive answer but it's my best guess. Both species are remarkably strong.

Right thanks, so it's probably best to eat these fresh, or as soon as posible.

I'll start a cyans thread if I have any more questions or ID requests. Don't want to go off topic as this is liberty caps thread.

I've heard many an old story of them growing on school fields and golf courses etc but have never really seen for myself.

I've had them from golf courses before. The reason many people might not find them is because the greenkeepers will most likely either destroy them or collect them for themselves as soon as they see them. And they're normally out on the courses for about 6am each morning.

Luckily for me, my friend is a greenkeeper at the local golf course, and he's not too interested in mushrooms so he gives them me

Bring on the rain!

I seem to be pretty gripped too. I've dreamt about mushrooms countless times, almost on par with times I've dreamt about sex!

Haha, me too. Well, last year anyway. I had loads of dreams of finding them in about August or September, and loads of dreams about tripping.

Had a dream that my mate gave me some liberty caps and then I had to have a job interview. Sat on the bus tripping. I could see weirder stuff than a real trip. And I didn't make it to the interview - think I got distracted by something

It's weird how it works it's way into dreams. It's like mycelium has started to work it's way through your brain to give you a reminder that it's that time of year again.

I live about two miles from where you found that box full, but I've found nothing yet this season :frown: What's your secret? Ha

I know it is really early but it's pretty much the exact same climate. I don't get it. But really I guess it's up to Mr Semilanceata when and where he decides to show himself. My time will come.

Does anyone here take fly agaric? how? what are they like? worth a go? obviously i've never done them but i'm very curious, actually i lie i did make a tea from a few dried caps once but it did nothing apart from give me slightly more energy.

My mate's had some. He said they were a bit evil. Interesting and peculiar, but there was just something evil about them. But other people on here have said they enjoy the Fly trip. I guess it's as much to do with the person taking them as it is to do with the mushroom itself. It takes two to tango. lol. Also, current mood, state of mind etc. play big roles in all types trips.

I love libs too much to try Fly Agaric. I'd feel guilty, ha.

Well, I went out after tea and found the grand total of ONE (1) liberty cap. Well at least I now know my new field is producing the goods, and next week will be a good time to pick because it's gonna be chucking it down for a few days

Can't wait :mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2:

nice one for that mate, guess im a bit thick lol, at least i know now, cheers mate

I was actually wondering the same thing. It's not that stupid really. Liberty caps require a certain coolness to be able to grow, so it's not stupid to think that a particular temperature produces more potent/consistent strength mushroom - just uninformed.

I've found 7 so far this year - I'm saving up for a magickal experience. I found one today in a new spot. One that I thought libs wouldn't grown in, so I'm happy  Gonna go back tomorrow for more. I was with friends today so I didn't want to waste their time.

I know I've only found 7, but I'm just happy they're out in August this year. Last year I didn't find any until October.

Bloody hell, that IS a lot! Most I've ever done in one night is 60 and that was pretty full-on. That wasn't tea though, if that makes a difference. Doesn't heat damage psilocybin?

Does anyone know how much 60 dried libs (varied size) weighs in at? I don't have any scales but I'm just curious. Will it be about 2-3g?

Thanks

Thanks for your replies, esp Mikey's effort.

Going off that picture of 3.08g, I'd say my 60 was about 2.5g.

That was intense-enough for me. Not too light, but not overpowering. I remember listening to this album that I'd heard at least 500 times before, but it sounded so different. It was like hearing it from a different angle that I'd never noticed before. Really intense closed eye visuals too.

How many does everyone else do usually?

Woooo! - it's been raining heavily here too (North-West). Now we just need these temps to drop a bit.

Glad your rain-dance worked - is there such thing as a cold dance? I might invent one :dancer:

What's the best way of finding the correct temperature for your local area? I don't have a thermometer and I've tried google searching, but aren't those weather reports and forecasts just for the nearest big city? Or an average temperature for the surrounding areas?

Out of the city in the hills (where liberty caps grow) would be at least a few degrees cooler. And those few degrees could make a big difference.

I don't want to even bother looking for mushrooms again until the temps drop below 10C at night and 15C in the daytime.

Anyone got any tips?

too hot with frost......?

Ahh, sorry, I misread your post. Still, I don't believe that someone saw frost in early september. esp at these temps.

Yes, I remember someone doing that last year. The pics weren't too great but I think they were useful enough to get the id they were after. Libs are a bit too small for camera-phones in my experience. But I don't have a very good camera-phone.

They're probably the closest lookalikes to libs I've ever seen. That first pic looked convincing, but as someone pointed out, the stems are a bit thick and dark. And usually when they're as dry as yours are, libs are a lot lighter with a dark bit at the bottom of the cap near the gills.

Nice finds Joie.

Found a few more today - only 5 - but I didn't go out till about half7 so I didn't have much time before it got dark. It got to the point where every pale thing in the grass looked like a liberty cap so I came home. Looks like a promising spot though - and it's public land which dampens the paranoia
