First cake slow birthing + added question
#12956445 - 07/26/10 03:55 PM (14 years, 5 months ago) |

I'm not an expert (yet) since this is my very first PF-tek cake finally in the fruiting box. Looks okay as far as I'm concerned:
The only question in my head is if any of this look like something that will turn to a pinhead or hyphal knot??

It's sitting in there for more than a week by now but I dont really see any sign of development. The humidity is constantly 99%, airpump working non-stop and its 77 degrees inside.
Just tell me everything will be fine :-)

LOL...
Did you soak the cake in water for 24hours before placing in the FC?...Im pretty sure you are supposed to soak it for 24 hours, then roll in vermiculite and then fruit in the FC...

Well,...im no mushroom growing expert since i got nuthin but contams...but idk, If it hasn't produced even any pins yet and if the mycelium seems pretty dry, then i'd say soak in water for 12-24hours then try again
And "fan moar"

Thanks for the advice, I just sunk the cake under water and 2moro will do the rolling also. And will fan it moar than ever. :-)
I really think contam is place-specific, because since I started this hobby I tend to become less and less careful about sterility and haven't met any contam so far. Or just lucky me...

aaaaaaanyways. a dunk and roll will help you immensely. what is your misting and fanning regiment if i may ask?
hint hint if you dont have one start misting and fanning.
fan more than you mist. water evaporating off your cakes is like #1 pinning trigger.

Hey, thanks for the hints. At the moment my misting is perfect as the humidity is always over 99%, the digital hygrometer stops measuring after a while, I guess it's probe cannot stand the extreme conditions? Perlit on the bottom sprinkled with h2o2 twice daily and there is a (kinda weak) air pump going on 24/7 into a bowl of water. I made only one hole as an exit for the CO2 maybe that's not enough?

Don't leave it in there all the time, it will die. Use it to check, then back into room air.

I thought the FC that RogerRabbit makes in his vids, has holes like around the whole container...But as long as you keep it very fanned and aired out it should be fine...
And about my contams...yup its my house...I live in my moms got 2 dogs and like over 5 cats...Nothing but dust and hair is everywhere..So bad to the point, when some sun shines through a window, and reveals the dust in the air...It makes me want to not breath because every breath is like a lungfull of hair and dust... ...And we smoke ALOT of weed 24-7 in the house, so i'd have to make a dust-free/smoke-free room to isolate ANY types of fungi

LOL I couldn't live like that. Not that pet person, however I love dogs n cats. Actually that lots of dirt is good for your immune system (unless you allergic to it) and you will have less chance to catch diseases.
As for the shrooms I know this is a crumb of comfort.

Yea....i don't think i will ever grow mushrooms because my animals...This $50 i have right now i was thinking about buying spores with,...BUT, i see nothing but green mold coming from that
It would be a waste of money on spores, so im buying 400grams of mimosa powder tomorrow! Can't wait

Your cake looks fine. Dunking is great but not mandatory.
It does look like it is developing the little fingers of mycelium....I think that this is why Doc suggested that you need to fan *more*. And the lore has it that evaporation from the cakes is a prime pinning motivator.
One thing Doc, if you are going to use slang, then why not lose some letters. moar takes just as long to type. ...how about "mo"? Just kidding.

Why don't you go hunting if you "live in oregon it contains the top 3 most potent mushrooms in the world and they grow like grass." ??

Okay, now I officialy understand that it wasn't a mistype but a slang. So now I also understand k00laid's sarcasm. Sorry guys, my first language is not english. That is why I need to confess I have no clue what do you mean about "evaporation off/from the cake"
Could someone be kind to shed some light on this?

Sorry about the slang.
Evaporation is a pinning trigger. But a cake is small, so you must replace the water.
Do not keep it soaked, let it dry a little, then re-wet.

I wanted to thank everyone who took the effort and replied my question. With following your instructions I can see something definitely developing on my cake.
However, I have a new question
I was experimenting a little. Went out the backgarden to collect some soil. Sterilized it, mixed with vermiculite and of course with some mycelium on barley (couldn't find rye in London). The mycelium seems loving it. The only thing I don't know when is it time to put to FC? Do I have to wait until it's fully colonized or enough to wait until the surface covered?

Ok, that's obvious. But my question was continued from there: "Do I have to wait until it's fully colonized or enough to wait until the surface covered?"
How would I know for sure if it's ready to fruit?

Please confirm, but I think that spawned substrates are fruitable when they are 100% colonized.
For cased substrates I have read of users who wait until the mycelia starts to break the casing before fruiting.
I cased three small trays of Texan with verm+peat and just put them straight into the FC.
Good Luck!

500g mimosa bark, is that enough for plenty trip or just one portion? never heard anything about it before you mentioned.
Here are the updated pictures of the mushies:

And a close-up:

They seem to enjoy posing for cam

I just had the first harvest of my life !!! :-) I am absolutely satisfied with the result, 53.7gramms

Cake is dunked, hope the second flush will take place before I have to leave for a one week holiday to Budapest. One thing is for sure: I trip next week :-) By the way, is there a way to get some nutrition into the cake to boost it, like inject dextrose or something like that?

Very nice first grow,...make sure to roll it in dry verm again before fruiting the 2nd flush,...and spray/mist/fan alot to provide luscious fruits
Let me know how much it is dry weight when dry ...nice

It is not cracker dry yet, but at the moment it is 4.4 gramms, which is a bit less than what I hoped. They must have had a lot of water in them. Still is good since I aint gonna try more than 1g for first...

Since I last wrote the second flush has started. Not even worth to turn on the cam for it as it looks pathetic compared to the first. Only five mushrooms and a few aborts near to harvest by now. But need to mention that the first been tested and it seems ultra potent or I am ultra sensitive because from half gramm lemon tek I tripped 4 hours with mindblowing visuals and a lot of confuseness. When I tripped I swore wont do it again but now I want it again. Luckily the leftover will be enough for a while...
(will write a trip report when I have a little time)
