So if it is in fact mites, what can be done about that? Do you have to get rid of the grow or what?

Gota figure out what kind you have first
Mites
Many mites are commonly found in straw and manure, most species are beneficial to mushroom growing as they feed on eelworms and other mites, although some can cause damage. Mites, like fly larvae, may feed on mushroom mycelium and on the mushrooms, where they can cause surface discoloration. They may also live on other fungi (weeds and indicator molds) found in mushroom culture. One example is the red pepper or pygmy mite (Pymephorus spp.). These mites are commonly associated with Penicillium and Trichoderma molds, upon which they feed. Pygmy mites do not feed on Agaricus. These mites have the ability to change into an intermediate stage called a hypopus, wherein they develop flattened bodies and a sucker plate with which they attach to moving objects, like flies. Mites at this stage swarm on top of mushrooms.
1. Tarsonemid mite
These mites are pale brown and are so minute that they are only visible with the aid of a microscope. They cause damage by feeding entirely on hyphae of mushrooms and the grower will know if he has these mites present, as the base of the stem of the mushroom will show a reddish brown discolouration. Where severe infestations occur the whole base of the mushroom may be detached from the growing surface.
Control 1. As with eelworms little can be done when mites are present in the growing house, therefore efficient composting and peak heating must take place to ensure that they are killed during the pasteurisation process. 2. Good hygiene should be practised around the farm, especially in the clearance of crop debris.
2. Tyroglyphid mites (Tyrophagus spp)
These mites can be identified as they are slow moving, translucent, with long hairs on their bodies.
If these mites are present in abundance they eat small pits in the caps and stalks. These pits then suffer from bacterial decomposition, which breaks down tissues just below the surface. This results in the skin collapsing which leaves an open pit. Tyroglyphids may also feed on mushroom mycelium, where they are present in large numbers, crop reductions can be caused. Mites usually gain entry into the compost by clinging onto Sciarid flies when the mites are the migratory stage. These migratory stages are normally produced when mites become overcrowded. The mites should not be a problem where efficient composting and peak heating takes place. Organic debris should not be allowed to accumulate around the farm as it provides a breeding ground for mites.
3. Red Pepper Mites (Pygmephorous spp)
These mites are not regarded as primary pests, their presence is usually an indicator that Trichoderma (green mould) is present in the compost. These mites feed on various weed moulds but not mushrooms, thus their presence indicates that the compost is unsatisfactory. The mites are yellowish-brown in colour, 0.25 mm in length and have a flattened appearance, they also are capable of rapid rates of reproduction. As already stated these mites are secondary pets and they often swarm on the casing and mushroom surfaces. Where this happens their presence makes the mushrooms unsaleable. These mites can also spread spores of Trichoderma from bag to bag.
Nematodes – Aphlelenchoides composticola and Ditylenchus myceliophagus
These nematodes are common inhabitants of most agricultural soils. Symptoms include a degeneration of mushroom mycelium and failure of mushrooms to form. Normally, an infestation is noticed at the time of third break. Mycelium in affected areas is completely destroyed and as the compost decomposes, it turns black and a medicinal odor is detectable. An effective Phase II is the primary control

Honestly I have no idea what you're supposed to do...but I see anything out of the ordinary I toss it the fuck out...rather just start some new jars or LC than fuck with repairing a mold infestation or some shit.
My opinion is that yeah it's an extra effort and a jar/tub/etc to buy. But you'll be more likely to avoid weird shit happening with mold, bacteria, bugs, etc. They weren't there before you started growing right? Then they shouldn't be there now either. It's not worth having some kind of infestation IMO.

Mites are no problem, just as long as you dry your mushrooms first. I get 'em all over wild mushrooms all the time.
As soon as the mushrooms start drying, all the mites start fleeing. By the time the mushroom is dry, there's a ring of dead ones in a circle around the mushroom. Just place each mushroom about 3 inches away from others, or they'll crawl from one to the other, and it could get messy.

Thanks for all the responses
I've been observing them closely. They just wiggle around slowly.
No I don't grow weed or any other plants.
At the rate these fruits are maturing they will probably be harvested before any damage can be done.
I jsut looked again, they cant be fly larva:

There's a bunch! lol. But none on my other tray or the cakes. The perlite must be keeping them at bay for now. Hmmm

I'm going to let the flush complete and then remove everything from the fc for dunking. Then I'll spray down with alcohol. It kills them on contact.
I can add some H2O2 to the dunking procedure without hurting the fungus right?

My shop vac might be a little strong... *shwoomp! there goes the shroom* Its time to bake my perlite again and clean the chamber. The little buggers have roamed up onto the lid of the FC and some have a tinge brown color starting to appear. They still don't show signs of eating the mushrooms but as others have said already, they gotta go! This flush needs to hurry up and mature before the the bugs do.
Edit:
Hey if anyone is willing or interested, I'll mail you a sample of the buggies for identification. I've got plenty to share lol.

Hey Truskool.
Actually PE6 can look very phallic...sometimes, and very Texan the rest of the time. (this is type the bugs are on)
I am growing it right now. I got Texans on my first tub, then Penises on cakes.
RR can elaborate (snake venom?!), as he was involved in the creation of this creature, but basically PE6 is an attempt to cross Texan and PE.

IME the resemblence between pe6 and pe is only the stems(looking very knarly) PE6 has big caps that open up and drop spores. While the stem have the characteristice pe looking knarliness. It is a cross of tx and pe that was released by accident before it was rdy Rattlesnake venom was used by RR in the creation of PE6. If your growing PE6 in hopes of having phallic shrooms you may be disappointed.

This strain is fun to work with for just that reason: the randomness. And the potency is nice.
So I flushed the trays last night and they have been soaking in a H2O2 / H20 solution since then. Cleaned out the chamber too. I can't find any more buggies at present so I guess I won't know if I got rid of them until I put the trays back in. I used 91% alcohol (sorry Doc_T the nearest Ace is like 25 miles) in combination with H2O2, applied liberally to every surface.
If any of you have PE6 pics please share

I haven't been following this thread closely, but just saw something above that freaked me the hell out.
Do NOT spray insecticides on your mushrooms. After harvest, which you should have done by now anyway, all you have to do is bump the mushrooms on a table a few times and the bugs will get knocked off. We grow a lot of outdoor mushrooms and they're always covered with small bugs of one kind or another. They're easy to get rid of as said above. Mushrooms absorb water, so any water based pesticide will be absorbed right into the fruit. I doubt seriously anyone wants to eat nerve toxins.
It's bad enough when apple growers spray their fruits, but in that case the toxins stay on the surface where 'most' can be rinsed off. Not so with mushrooms which will absorb the poison and then transfer it directly to your liver when you eat them. Think about that while you're tripping and it won't be pleasant. If you've already sprayed the damn things, toss them out. The spray is a thousand times worse than any bug. RR

I didn't spray the mushrooms with anything. I just wiped off the bugs best I could with my fingers/paper towel and then set them to dry. There was only 4-5 mushrooms with bugs on them.
Thanks for the input everyone.

So a little follow-up:
The mites ate the myc down to the bare substrate, but not the mushrooms. They never turned into flies though. The contamination stayed contained to one tray. Got a third flush even. Now I'm getting ready to start over with clean stuff and do a Burma / Costa Rican run.
I guess whatever those buggers were, they feed off of fungus for sure. Definitely don't want them. After they eat the myc, the substrate rots with contaminants.
