heating pads......is it worth it?

right now, my temperature is around 76 degrees. i just found an old electric blanket that i thought id wrap around my 7 jars. the jar tops are covered with aluminum *sp?* foil. they are tightly secured with rubberbands. I dont see how water could evaporate. is it worth it to try and raise the temp to about 80 some degrees? after looking at the growth/temperature graph, i think it is. think the cakes would dry up? thanks

Go with a submersable water heater that you can set the temp to and you will be golden. Heating pads and blankets in my opinion suck.

the thing is.....i dont have a submersable water heater. only an old electric blanket. will it dry the cakes out too much? it wont be at the highest setting, just enought to raise the temp a few degrees. i though it would also be good, cause when i place the cakes in a terrarium, there will be a greater temp. drop to initiate pinning...

Ok your best bet is to get a rubbermaid container and put some water in the bottom of it. Then put the heating pad under the container this wont dry out the jars. Just make sure there is enough water in the container and you can put the pad right up to 84 degrees. AND THEY ARE FIRE HAZERDS SO BE CAREFUL

electric blankets are firehazards even on very low settings? the controller thing goes from 1-10. i was think of putting it on 3 or 4. it really does not get that hot. i mean, the thing is made to be slept with. there must be some precautions they took, or else wouldnt people burn up all the time while sleeping? if it can be used to be slept with, would it really be that dangerous to leave on for a few days?

Do you think they were made to be left on 24/7 for months at a time?

Dude. Just make an incubator. Get two identical opaque tubs, put on in the other, fill it with water, then put a submersible aquarium heater. Hagen makes some good ones for less than $20 that will be more than enough heat to keep the little amount of water you have. My incubator now consists of two 25 Gallon Rubbermaid tubs. Works very well. This would probably be cheaper and safer than a heating pad/electric blanket for sure. Also, it would produce better results. You should search the shroomery's FAQs for other options. Just my two cents.

i havent heard of an electric blanket going on fire in years. years ago in the 60's and 70's they were of poor design, most manufacturers are now so aware of the reputation electric blankets have that they have many safety features. i would leave my blanket plugged in for a week before my aq heater. my last aq heater boiled dry and started to melt the plastic bucket it was in. it was a rena which is meant to be a good brand.
anyway, electric blankets will get too hot. they are made to go above or around human body temps about 35C. i plan on using one soon. it will have to be hooked up to a plug timer. say 5 mins on 20 off. and increase until i find the right setting

hey sancho, check this out, i've been actually USING a heating pad for my incubator for over a month now it might have dryed the substrate out, but only minimally and i just threw a wet washcloth in the box or a cup of perilite and it brought the humidity to optimal.....these people who try to get you parinoid with the fire hazard thing are working for the agents (ala matrix). please check out this heating pad tek post. I"m so parinoid i think my family is out to get me....but then again they just might be

I have used one for years, same one as I own today, I use a double tub system with holes in the bottom of the inner tub, and the lower tub with an inch of water, as of today I have had no melt through, no fires, no drying problems that werent of my own initiation, and have maintained an optimal colonizing temp in the incubator....
My only advice it stack it on plywood to prevent heat transfer to your carpet

I just used a heat pad in a drawer beneath a drawer with my jars it was a constant 84 degrees, but my jars have since dried out.

I personally dispise those fish tank heaters, and would recommend a heating pad any day. Its all personal preference, whatever works for you.

you can put them in a tupperware box so no moisture escapes. you can put some water in the box too. you should really have towels between the pad and jars to act as a buffer

Personaly, I've had very good luck with heating pads. I kept my jars sealed tight throughout incubation with the tape over the holes. By doing this I didn't allow for the moisture in the jars to escape. I just moved my pad under my terrarium in order to incubate my casing. I find that I am always able to maintain a nice steady temp and I personaly think they are safe. Like you said, they are meant to be accidently left on in bed....I think they will be fine under your rubbermaid. But like everyone else said...be safe...be smart...

yes you can dunk them after (and i would reccommend this anyway), so the dryness doesn't matter in that sence...the only problem is if the cakes get to dry during incubation it may slow down or even stop their growth, but i have never had this problem of to dry, lol it's always been to wet that was a problem for me anyway so i think heating pads help
