The parasitic Lobster Mushroom(Hypomyces lactifluorum)transforms Lactarius and Russula hosts into excellent edibles. If the host cannot be confirmed, avoid it.

Hypomyces lactifluorum isn't known to infect poisonous mushrooms.
If it does, the Hypomyces renders them harmless, since there haven't been any reports of poisonings from this species afaik.

There are no reports of anybody ever being poisoned by Lobster Mushrooms, so you don't need to attempt an ID of the host. That advice is old and is no longer applicable.
Caution is always a good thing when eating mushrooms, so keep warning people about possible problems, Blue-FunGuy.
Happy mushrooming!

I'm not saying that you cannot find newer books on fungi, just that most are old.
I just double-check any unusual data against the web, I have a lot of old mushroom books.
