Car troubles - Leaking tranny fluid (edit)

I drive a 94 Toyota Tercel - it is an automatic.
Basically, last Sunday - i was driving on some forestry roads with my little car, and might have pushed it a bit, i was driving up steep switch back inclines in 2nd gear.
Without realizing, i ended up driving about 20 minutes on the highway, on 2nd gear going 100km/h - needless to say, i was revving very high, and burned alot of oil.
The car has since lost acceleration power, and its shifting is out of sync. Instead of shifting into a higher gear, the car just revs really high, then maybe shifts up, but then jumps back down and revs high again...
In addition, when it is in park and idling, or sitting at a light with the breaks on - the car is quite rough/jerky and the engine appears to be idling higher than it used to.
Can i fix this - or should i take it to a mechanic?
Have i caused any serious damage, or are adjustments all thats needed?

Have a mechanic at least have a look. Sounds like your transmission to me, but...

If you drive an automatic, why was the car even in second? Automatic transmissions normally adjust for load issues (i.e. climbing a hill) by downshifting, to keep the car in the power to climb. I can understand dropping into third could've been bad for power, but if you keep your speed up by putting your foot into it, then it'll just downshift, and you'll eventually find the right pedal to keep it going along.
Sounds like you've possibly lost some transmission fluid. This will cause late shifting as well as rough selection (slamming into gears) and gear hunting issues.
What I want you to d is check the fluid with the car running and in park, and see if it's low. If it is, add fluid. If you can't find a place to add it in, you'll need a funnel and have to go in from the dipstick tube. Remember, the hatch marks of the transmission stick read in pints, not quarts, so don't overfill. Once confirmed full, get in, shift through all the gears, starting in park, all the way to first and back, and leave each gear selected for about 5 seconds. Go back and forth the range three or four times and place back in park. Recheck the fluid, add if necessary, repeat procedure till fluid is full.
P.S. - Remember to buy the right fluid. A lot of Toyota vehicles use Toyota specific automatic transmission fluid. If you don't know, and don't have your manual to find out, ask the men at the auto store for fluid, and tell them it's for your Toyota. Or just google it and find out. I would but am far too lazy.
Have a nice day!

Great, thanks for the headsup Grimey!
FYI - i pretty much resolved all the problems with the help from the folks in the pub. It turned out that my 3rd spark plug was badly fouled and as soon as i changed the plugs, and gave the car a bottle of fuel injector cleaner - it started running like a dream.
If it's been sitting for a few days, it'll blow a cloud of smoke from the exhaust when starting up, but i can't notice any when i am driving...
I've just finished a 2000km road trip and the car is not burning oil and is running great.
However, i was paranoid and looking around under the car during the trip. I discovered that the drippings in the drive way are Transmission fluid. When i checked the fluid, it is "full" (i had the tranny fluid changed about 10-15,000km's ago)
So, leaky transmission - what to do?
I'll be monitoring my fluids carefully.

The most common place for transmission fluid to leak is around the pan's gasket. You'd need to drop the transmission pan and replace the gasket. Not a difficult job, but messy and can be hard to know what you're getting into if you've never seen it done. If you have a good mechanic, it shouldn't really cost any more than a transmission fluid change + the price of the new gasket. Try to verify if that's where it's seeping out.

most leaks around pan gaskets in my experience come from 2 things, either wicking through the gasket on paper gaskets or from over torquing the pan bolts causing the pan not to seal correctly, most of the leaks I've seen came from bad seals, the front and rear or on cooling lines
the front seal is the only one that's a real booger to change
