Quick Casing Question
    #1293905 - 02/09/03 04:54 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

I recently harvested around 12 grams of dried Lipa Yai's of a coir casing over 1 and 1/4 pints of PF cake.

If I were to keep the controlled conditions (humidity and temp) the same as my earlier attempt, but this time used 3 pints of PF cake, would my harvest be much larger?

Thanks for your help!

~PEace

You're talking about crumbling them and casing them correct...

I think this all boils down to biological efficiency...

100% biological efficiency (somthing that any mycologist should strive for) is:
- Take the dry weight of the substrate (your pf cake miuns the jar obviously) then multiply that by .1 this will be the dry weight of your fruitings.

Achieving 100% BE has everything to do with humidity, temps, technique and other parameters. It is possible to achieve more than 100% BE it's all in how you take care of your stuff...

In short crumbling 3 pints of cakes will increase your total crop.

Edit: i've been thinking about this maybe one of the more experienced members can answer this question. Does BE apply to non bulk substrates (grain, cakes) or only to straw, dung and the like...

-A

yes, you will get more if all other considerations are right.....

How is it possible to get more than 100% BE. 100% BE would be Perfect growing conditions. At 100% BE the cake/casing is allready producing as much as it can as fast as it can. Just a thought. :smirk:

A few qutes from here:
http://www.nansnook.com/forum/index.php?act=ST&f=21&t=836&hl=anno&s=8e0efd96adee4e5cd1c5f431ce604fab

"Biological Efficiency is a term frequently used to describe yield potentials of mushrooms from various substrates.
Simply put, a yield of 1 lb. of fresh mushrooms from 1 lb. of dry substrate is considered to be 100% Biological Efficiency."

"Biological Efficiency (in mushroom cultivation) is defined by the button mushroom industry as:
1 pount of fresh mushrooms grown from 1 pound of dry substrate is 100% biological Efficiency (Stamets, GGMM, 3rd edition, page 55)."

" this "biological efficiency" is not a true efficiency in a thermodynamical sense(which can?t go above 100% of course, not in this universe), but a definition to be able to compare different grow arrangements and to look on how efficient they are at converting substrate to mushrooms. "

Persoanlly I find it easier to express 100% BE as:

"Achieving a 10% conversion of dry substrate mass into dry mushrooms" (GGMM p50)

This all expression is reliant on two constants tho. 75% water content in your substrate and fresh mushrooms with a 90% water content.
I prefer this (probably because everything my pine tree grows is eventually dried)

That is (quantitivley inflated) for every 10 pounds of dry substrate you will get 1 pounds of dry product.

As Anno has quoted numbers greater than 100% BE are achieveable. The efficiency definition kinda throws you off... I think it would be easier to understand if expressed in a ratio...

100% BE = 10(dry substrate) : 1(dry mushrooms)
