Why not like music, if you didn't have music what the fuck then. I wouldn't know what would happen if I didn't have music. I'd prolly ready a lot of books, but I don't b/c I got music. Music feels good and sounds good especially when it is good. Its like gladiators except they're musicians and their weapons are instruments and the more they practice and different techniques they have makes them better and a different player from one another and they make that sound that someone or a group of people will love, dance, share a night w/ someone, get beatup to, be chased to, be sad to, be happy to, and because its awsome.

I'm just guessing here, but I think what he's asking is why people developed an interest in music. Come to think of it, why did people develop an interest in any of the arts to begin with? What is it about music and art that helped the development of civilization?

I think music affects our awareness and brainwaves somehow. Some cultures, like Hawaiians, some Native Americans, have no written language, and pass down important knowledge through music from generation to generation. Perhaps our love for music is a by-product of a survival instinct that evolved over the ages.

I think music is food for the soul. It isn't proveable by science, but that's why we need it.

i cant NOT like music. if you cut me, the blood rushing out would sound like music to me. everything around me inspires something in my mind, and evokes a melody to me. its weird. if i get into a music conversation with someone, and i really am into the music, ill get this tingling down my spine real quick. its crazy. its all i want to do in life too, be involved with music in any way i can. i breathe it. listen to the cold song bleed sometime.

we like music because it is a form of art.
Just as a painting is a work of art created with light, a song is a work of art created with vibration. So why do we like art? Its hard to say - I can say I personally like it because I get a nice chunk of somebody else's brain without ever talking to them, and get to explore all sorts of creative worlds that my fellow men have created - art makes me proud to be a part of Humanity.
-------------------- Insert an "I think" mentally in front of eveything I say that seems sketchy, because I certainly don't KNOW much. Also; feel free to yell at me.

Bert, its funny that you mention that. ive been experimenting with a program called brain-wave generator, that makes specific sounds that when listenedd to with headphones apparently cause your brainwaves to resonate in certain patterns, )ie Delta waves, Theta waves etc) and can help you meditate really effectively. Its been working quite well for me (its backed with scientific research).
Anyway, maybe music does something similar on a more subtle level. That is, causes our brainwave patterns to respond, and certain patterns are considered pleasing / nice / good / whatever by different people.
just an out there guess anyway.
Personally i dont care why music is good, but boy do i LOVE it!!

Jono.

i think art and music touch us on a level that other forms of communication can't reach. it's kind of like a universal language, one that you can make into whatever you feel it to be...

You guys are all talking about sound waves and vibrations. Isn't that the basis behind a lot of mantras and chants? Aren't they supposed to incorporate sound vibration to stimulate brain wave activity too. Aborigines use didjeridoos to stimulate different mind states by using sound vibration too. They claim that the universe is just a conglomerate of different vibrations and by manipulating and mimicking these vibrations, the secrets of the universe will be revealed. Pretty far out, huh?
