$500 for for a 6 in tattoo? ridiculous. this is prob the simplest request a client could make. he just wants people that pick shit out of a book-that's a copy machine not an artist... they're doing the same shit here. Im a tattoo artist and shops here are charging out the ass for substandard work.
as far as the silhouette thing goes it sounds like a good idea but think about this; check out samples of their black work, preferably pics of tattoos that have healed and aged some. I use a black that doesn't fade whatsoever but it will spread a little (the edges blur slightly during healing). Some black spreads more than others especially with artists that dont work fast enough. The last thing you want is a black blob two years from now that you have to explain every time you show it and its turning blue.
I would consider using some color for the background since your foreground is black. it will make the scene bolder even if they just do a light color wash. or have them have them brush white in real soft. your eye wont really see it but you brain will and it makes it pop even more. hope this helps pm if you want

charging 500 bucks means he couldn't do it if he wanted too.
The key is to find an artist who will enjoy doing the work and will sit spend time with you and know exactly what you want. 90 percent of my work is custom work and my main tattoo artist would spend 2-4 days on each piece One day talking about it and dawning it up. Next showing me and fixing anything I didnt like then tattoo.
Any artist who wont do that our acts like its just a pain in the ass fuck them. This is something that going to be there for ever and those jokes of artist can keep on doing name drops.
I dont know how many shops I've walked out of looking to drop 500 bucks and just left pissed off.
Oh and deadhearts I know of a good artist by you he did most of my work My artist

This goes back to my first reply. Find an artist that's willing to work with you for a reasonable price. You could have walked into this doucherocket's studio with a drawing in-hand and he could've botched it royally, since it's obvious he wanted to charge you so much because he lacks the ability and/or drive to do it properly. My artist won't even do work that's not custom-drawn by him, and he won't work on anyone else's tattoos. Says a lot about how seriously he takes his job IMO. He's the shit.

thanks for all the input. im def going to put more thought into this and look through other jobs to get some more ideas. i did like the idea on throwing some color in the background as well. maybe a sun drop.... or something along those lines. i am having a hard time fitting, "the lost" into the image though.
thanks!!!

a quick idea.
what if i had both my chick and i on our knees in the shillowet form looking down at some baby foot prints and beneath it could say something like forever in our hearts and in the middle of the foot prints it could have the birth/death date. for color the back draft could be a sun set or something along thouse lines

Yeah I like the traditional style for sure. If you like him you should check out Name Brand tattoo in Ann Arbor. Jeff Zuck is one of the best around. The others in the shop are not bad either.

Not a fan of name brand for personal reason I got one piece done there and will never go back and for what they charged
Ann Arbor is good if you want to over pay for work. At least there and at lucky monkey (if its still around)
